I realized I haven't checked in on the smoking front yet -- I'm not smoking. I mean, I had one stressful day two weekends ago where I bought a pack and smoked, and then stopped again when the pack was gone. I am still using the lozenges occasionally, but I really don't think about it anymore unless I'm drinking or feeling extremely upset/emotional. And neither of those things happen very often, so I think we're in the clear. And I'm not going to worry about a few social drinking cigs, either.
Tonight is also my night/weekend off from the gym (well, maybe I'll go Saturday.) I'm going to Skype with Britch, then see my honey again. I'm so smitten this week, and I'm just enjoying it. ALSO I woke up at 5 am to pee this morning and I couldn't fall back asleep until after 7, and I had brief but scary rat dreams, and then the alarm went off. So I'm sleepy. I finally sat up, drank some milk and watched an episode of Good Eats on demand, then fell right asleep after. I really need to make myself stop trying and get up and drink some milk in the future, instead of waiting for 90 minutes first. My brain was just all over the place!
Concerns: When we moved into this apartment, we had to put down 2 months' security deposit. Now that years have passed, I'm afraid my dickbag landlord will fight me on that -- I mean, I will withhold my last month's rent for one of those payments, but I won't be able to give two months' notice of moving, so he'll basically have to write me a check for the other part of it. And I have a feeling this will be a fight. Should I remind him that we have that two months' security deposit now to lay some groundwork? Casually, like "oh, did the new tenants have to pay two months' security deposit, too?" Ha. Also, what if we can't find an apartment we like or Hike's too busy with school to come look and I find the perfect one and have to decide ON THE SPOT BY MYSELF? So I'm getting to talk to Britch finally but what about how I'm still kind of upset that I went to all that expense and effort to go to/be in her wedding and then she hermits on me right afterwards with no appreciation for it. How do I handle that when we talk tonight? What should I bring to his Dad's house for the Friday-after-Thanksgiving awkward-fest? And that's all I can remember right now but there were so many worries at 5 am, dudes.
And in other news, I'm considering the IUD because I like the idea of not taking hormones and I'm curious as to how/who I am naturally after ten years on the Pill, plus now on 50 extra mg for my acne. Plus, it sounds possibly easier/cheaper/more convenient and I could hopefully have fewer mood swings/strong emotional reactions, but hey, maybe I'd have more? Plus it could be a long adjustment period (6 months sometimes) with lots o' cramps and bleeding and my acne might come back with a vengeance (seriously, when I brought it up with my mom, her first question was What about your acne? and her second was Are you still smoking? So at least she was concerned about my health EVENTUALLY.) I don't know if I should do the copper one or the Mirena (which releases some localized hormones) and I was talking to Hike about it and I said that they're good for three years, which seemed fine because we wouldn't want to have babies before then, and he was like Well, we might. So now mentally I'm all BABIES? YOU WANT BABIES RIGHT AWAY? in very manic way, like it's exciting and also terrifying and I didn't get that far in my "in the next few years" daydreams. Now there's a timeframe, people. He just said that he does think about it a lot and in context of his age and stuff, and he'd like to start our family on the sooner side, and I was like OH, ok... I didn't realize, but I'm amenable. (I didn't visibly freak out, don't worry.) I mean, I'd be all for it, as long as we could afford the little thing. And maybe not live in an apartment...and maybe we should try a dog first...but who knows. Obviously there are other bridges before that bridge, but that was a surprising conversation. And he's going to read up more on the IUD to give me his informed opinion, but he loves the idea of no artificial hormones.
Oh and I got my haircut at lunch and I LOVE this feeling. So light and swingy and soft and healthy! Remind me to get a haircut more often than 3x a year, ok?
And that's what's rolling around in here today. Adieu!
Today's eats:
B - Cereal, Milk, Apple - 5
L - Turkey sammy, orange, string cheese, Special K bar - 7
D - Taco Bake (7?), ff sour cream, roasted apples & squash & turnips & onions - 8
S - yogurt, pumpkin pudding, homemade granola bar - 8.5
TOTAL - 28.5, so .5 under but I have to look up that taco bake recipe at home.

Bon Vivage
I think I made that word combination up? But it works.
Hello and goodbye, lovers! Today, finally, I leave for my grand UK adventure. Yes, it's rainy here, but the hurricane hasn't hit yet so I should be OK for my 11 pm departure. I'm sad that Hike can't join me, but I'm still very much looking forward to some fun high-school-friend times, some party times, and some quiet, relaxing alone times on the Scottish moors. I just wish it were already time to go! I'm even excited for the airplane and the airplane food (it's so organized, and it's a surprise!) and my new travel pillow and landing in London and navigating my way to Britch's neighborhood.
So right, I land tomorrow at 11 am in London, the Hen Party is tomorrow night, Saturday night we may do a movie night, Sunday we take the train north to Glasgow, Scotland and stay in a hotel, we move to the castle grounds on Monday (I'm staying in a lodge with my two other best high school friends, who are married to each other), Tuesday night is the rehearsal dinner, Wednesday is the wedding, and then Thursday I can recover and Friday morning I take the train to Edinburgh to catch my flight home through Amsterdam. Whew! It sounds busy but also has some down time, which I'm very pleased with.
Bug-wise, things seem good at home. I'm mostly unpacked, we've gone a week since the new company sprayed, and we haven't had any issue yet. I did find one long-dead bb in the bottom of a shoe that had the heel cap missing (a sandal!) so that freaked me out because it was in my closet on the floor, and that was the first I'd found in the closet area, but nothing else has shown up. I also sprinkled Diatomaceous Earth around the corners and floorboards and everywhere last night, so I feel extra defended.
Now I can just run away and not worry about my apartment for a week! And poor Hike has his first class on Saturday morning, ugh, but it'll be good for him to get the MBA started so he can stop being so anxious, not knowing what to expect. And it'll be fall and then winter before you know it, and I love those seasons, and we already bought our Xmas tickets (I'll go home from Xmas to New Year's, he'll come for New Year's) and I'm just very much in love. I hope that Hurricane Irene doesn't sweep him away while I'm gone, and without a phone! It's back to the 2000s with calling cards for me!
Anyway, enjoy your distaster weekend, friends, and I'll fill you in when I return.

Jet Sweating
I bought my tickets to London/Scotland for Britch's wedding! I leave on a Thursday night at 11 pm from JFK, land in London at 11 am, try to recover for the afternoon and then it's the Hen Party aka Bachelorette Party. We're in London (all staying at Britch's apartment, maybe?) until Sunday, when we take the train to Glasgow and all stay in a hotel. Monday we go to the castle and move into our lodges (as in, I'm staying in a lodge with my good high school friends who are now married) (in separate bedrooms) and then the wedding is Wednesday and on Friday morning I'll take a bus down to Edinburgh to catch my flight home (through Amsterdam), landing at JFK at about 7:20 EST.
Whew! I'm much more excited now that I booked it (and that it was about $200 less than the price I'd been seeing.) We were really disappointed that Hike couldn't join me, but now I'm seeing the silver lining there, too -- I would be more worried about his comfort when bunking 6 people in an apartment or while doing girl stuff (Hen Party, bridesmaid duties) and also I'd feel guilty making him miss the first week of grad school, since I know he'll be anxious about that. So I think it's worked out rather well, and it'll be some great time to spend with my two best friends from the ol' high school days, and I'll try to look at it as my last great traveling alone adventure. (I mean, I hope...)
I also discovered that I already have shoes I can wear with my bmaid dress, so I'll save a bit there, and I'm just going to enjoy this trip and try not to stress about money so much. I hate money and how I worry about it all the time.
So, in other news, remember all my optimism about the bites? Well, yesterday two little red itchy bumps showed up on the back of my right wrist, and I honestly thought they might just be random mosquite bites, but now the insane itchiness and some swelling is making me think my nighttime vampire friend came back. Maybe he couldn't get up my arm to the sweet stuff (due to my long sleeves) so he bit where he could? I mean, they don't have those red streaks or anything, but the itching is really intense like before, so I'm not sure. I am very upset that it happened again, in the once-a-week timeframe, too -- so I still haven't solved this mystery. SO ANNOYING.

Sweet Little Apathy
Oh no, it's been a week since my last post! Work was pretty busy until today, so I haven't had as much internet time as I'd like. Let's catch up.
Last weekend was very lovely if a little quiet, as Hike was suffering from a cold/cough situation. Friday night he had plans with friends and I had scheduled my facial, which was amazing and relaxing and the only problem was that I had to pee after about an hour, and there was no easy way to get up and excuse myself, since I was covered in a mask and various towels. So I loved it, but I decided that next time I'm going to discuss with Crystal beforehand (yes, that's my Irish lass' name. I love her.) and have a bathroom break planned. Then I won't be distracted while relaxing. Crystal also talked to me about how Proactiv is not good for your skin as it's made from harmful chemicals and it's addictive, and no matter what when you stop using it, you break out for at least 6 weeks. Which means you'll never stop because you'll think you still need it. I decided to try and wean myself off of it, since I tried to quit using it before and had that exact experience. I'll try to wait it out, and if I keep breaking out excessively after a certain amount of time, I can use it again, but hey, while I'm quitting all sorts of chemicals, why not pick another? Though it'll take awhile till I stop using it entirely, as I'm going to slowly use up the stuff I already have at home.
ANYWAY, then Hike came over later and we watched more Fraggle Rock (which is NOT a euphemism, though that is an entertaining thought), and then Saturday I relaxed in the afternoon and at night we went to eat at Cafe Bar in Astoria (terrible name) and I had Pumpkin Ravioli in this tomato mushroom sauce that was really good, and then we saw The King's Speech. YOU GUYS, I've now seen all of the Oscar-nominated movies except Toy Story 3 (which I have at home from Netflix now) and Winter's Bone, which I don't know if I want to see. I've never been so caught up! Anyway, The King's Speech was great and heartwarming and I liked it a lot, but I think I still would pick True Grit as my favorite. Sunday we watched Emma, his pick, as he'd just finished reading the book on his Kindle, since classics are free. It was nice and nostalgic, since I hadn't seen that movie since Britch and I would watch it at slumber parties in high school. The rest of Sunday I watched Toy Story 2 (to get up to speed) and got stuff done around the house.
Monday night was Harpie dinner, and the theme was McDonald's updated and a little Russian, in honor of the 20th anniversary of the first McDonald's to open in Moscow. Everyone had great ideas, from Chicken Nugget apps with Russian dressing to a Mickey D's salad to cokes with vanilla vodka in McD cups to our individually-wrapped desserts of Russian tea cookies! And I made a hamburger pie. Yum. We also played Apples to Apples and got silly and laughed a ton. I realized later that I am no longer coughing when I laugh really hard -- yay!
Tuesday was mellow and catching up on home stuff, and then last night my roomie gave us tickets to see Colin Quinn's Broadway show. We went to the Red Lobster in Times Square beforehand, since Hike's mom had given him a gift certificate for Christmas and told him to take me, plus who doesn't love a RL, amiright? Anyway, we had a big caloric dinner, then rambled around Toys R Us until showtime, and the show was hilarious. Then a taxi home!
It's been a good week, but I've been fighting a splitting headache since Tuesday night, and that's very unusal for me. I'm wondering if it's sinus-related, since my nose is slightly stuffy and today I'm a bit hoarse, but it's not like full-blown sick, so I can't justify staying home. I took Tylenol all day yesterday and felt better by the evening, and then woke up this morning before the alarm in lots of pain again, so I took two Tylenol and two Ibuprofin, and that'll be my regimen today. I also feel sort of disoriented, so I'm looking forward to crawling into bed after work this evening. I was saying how I wanted to get sick so I could have a day off of work, but I don't want to get medium sick! That benefits no one. Lame.
Anyyyyway, starting next week I'm going to try and be healthier again with my eating habits. I've been lax for these first few weeks of not smoking, but I can feel the weight gain now (I'm at 138 as of yesterday) and I don't like it, so I need to buckle down again. Which means this week I'm eating lots o' junk while I can. So what who cares?
I also ordered two different pairs of rain/snow boots since my pair with owls on them has been compromised with some cracks -- it makes sense considering I bought them last year for $20, and those things have about a year or less of usage, not to mention how often I've worn them this winter. My plan is to try both new pairs on and compare, but I think I'll have a hard time deciding! Check them out.

Haa since they've sold out of that last pair, I can only view the tiny thumbnail, but they're black with a silver branch design.
Well, I guess that is all the big news. Oh, I did pick out a bridesmaid's dress for Britch's August wedding, and while I don't know yet if Hike will be able to join me, he's changed his grad school intentions slightly and that may mean he's free the last week of August! We'll see, but I hope I don't have to attend a romantic Scottish castle wedding alone... I'm trying not to worry about it, but you know me, friends. The potential for messed-up plans stresses me out.
That said, I'm way too worried and anxious lately for no good reason (except maybe nicotine withdrawal) so I'm trying to recite this mantra while breathing to calm myself down: Breathing in I relax my body, breathing out I relax my mind. You know, just anything to stop the incessant crazy that happens in my head.
Andddd it's almost Valentine's Day! I'm so confused about how to handle the present portion. Do we buy presents? Do we talk about it beforehand so we're on the same page? Is a card adequate, with some small token plus a romantic dinner? What do I do?
Breath in, breath out.

From 6 Boys to 5 Napkins
What a lovely two days of FALL PREVIEW weather! Yes, I know it's raining, but it's in the sixties. There is a cool breeze. There are sweats to wear. It's delightful. And today is extra delightful because I got a kiss and a hug before I left for work. I walked out of my front door at the same time as my downstairs hot chef neighbor, and we said hello, and crossed paths on the sidewalk in front of our house. (He has a separate entrance for the basement apartment.) As I walked by, I said "Have a good day!" and he sort of grabbed me for a hug and cheek kiss, and I made a surprised noise and he laughed. It was cute and impulsive, and made me smile all the way to work! Besides, he's hot. Though there is some speculation from the more manly Italian neighbors that he's gay. It didn't help that he came home late Friday night with a dude, but they could've just been having a man sleepover! And I don't really care either way...just kiss me with that stubbly cheek, dude. And cook me some mussels.
Anyway, let's talk about what I've been up to. Friday I was so tired after all of Thursday's excitement that I went home with a nap in mind. My neighbor on the other side, a young married dude, was out on their stoop with his neighborhood friends (as they all grew up in Astoria) drinking beer and tequila. I've met most of them before, and we all said hi when I got home from work. Married Neighbor (MN) offered me a beer, but I passed, saying I had drank all day the day before. So I tried to nap and failed for like 90 minutes, then watched The Invention of Lying, and anytime I'd go out for a smoke, MN would ask me to come over. (He's very nice, by the way, and I like him and his friends. I've gone to a 4th of July party there before. I was just in pj's and not feeling social.) Finally I caved and ran in to put on a bra under my sleepshirt/dress thing, and then sat down with them and started in on the Bud Lights. I was out there till 4:30, my friends. They were all really nice, though MN became Drunk MN and began telling me how I'm hot, and he'd massage my shoulders/leg, put his hat on me, play with my hair, etc., but I was treating him a bit like a pesky child and just trying to brush it off, as he was so wasted he could barely speak. One of the other boys, Sleeve, used to live in my first Astoria apartment, in the basement unit. His mom owned the building and was my landlord, so I've known him forever, though we never really spoke too much. Anyway, he and I talked a lot, and he wants me to play on his fall softball team, and he wants to cook me dinner, and we were making all of these sorts of plans that people do. He got my number, and more on this shortly. All in all, it was such a good time. I was in pj's, without makeup, hanging out with six dudes (half were married), most of whom complimented me at some point. I was told I was hot and I met a boy. I mean, that's a pretty good night, right?
So after everyone leaves at about 4:30, Sleeve and I were texting and he was saying he wished he would've kissed me, and I was so cute, etc. Being drunk, I said well, maybe you should come back here and kiss me now. Then he calls, and he's all like "Oh my god, I want to kiss you for hours, but if I come over there we won't just kiss, and I want to do this the right way. I like you, I want to take you out. Let's hang out tomorrow afternoon around 3 or 4, ok?" etc. He's also more graphic but I will spare you. A word about Sleeve: He's a big Italian American dude, he boxes, he plays a lot of sports, he's loud and full of swagger around his guy friends, he makes gross jokes, and it half turns me off and half turns me on. I'm also only medium attracted to him, but we'll see -- I like his body, because he's tall and strong, but I have to see the face again I think. Basically he's not the type I'm used to, but I'm willing to see what happens. It's nice, though, because I'm not very wrapped up in it, just curious. So it's not getting to me yet.
So SATURDAY. I sleep until about 10, which was not long enough but hungover me can no longer sleep in. I meet Schmess for brunch at Vesta, which was delish, then head back home to bed. I think I have plans with Sleeve, but I don't set an alarm. I'm awakened at 4:30 pm by a text from him, saying he'd slept that whole time, he was exhausted. We just text chatted for a little while, with no mention of hanging out. Finally later, I was getting ready to head to Schmillie's BIRTHDAY PARTY, and I sent him one to say I was leaving soon, and ask if he was coming with me. (This had been discussed previously.) No immediate response, so I happily set off to Brooklyn. He texted while I was en route to say he was at his Mom's (I knew he was possibly going to go see her, as she lives in NJ now), and maybe we could meet up later. Meh.
So Schmillie's party was at The Richardson in Williamsburg. It was so great! I was the first to arrive, which gave me time to fully check out the surroundings, and I really liked the bar. They had very fun old-fashioned cocktails and a very tempting food menu, and it was very speakeasy-ish in decor. Then everyone arrives, and Schmillie can tell you more about it here, but she looked lovely and sexy and it was good to see her friends who I now consider my own, as well as hang out with Schmannon and Schmerin. Then I was fading fast at midnight, so shared a cab back to Astoria with Schmannon and went right to bed.
Sunday I woke up at a reasonable hour, had some coffee, and got inspired by the rainy weather and lack of internet at home to take myself to the movies! First, I called my Grandma to wish her a happy birthday a week late. I'm terrible. My mom had reminded me to call, but then I forgot, then when I'd remember it'd be at like 11 pm or while I was out drinking, which are not good times to call your 84-year-old grandmother. Then I texted Sleeve to say that I'd gone home right after the party, as I was so tired, and asked about his visit with his mom. Anyway, then Eat Pray Love! I really liked it. I had read the book, so I knew what to expect, and I always love Julia Roberts. She just makes me happy. I realize the movie doesn't solve life's problems and is another sort of consumer-driven religious grab bag (yes, I read you, critics), but basically it's a nice story with beautiful scenery, and I did really relate to some points the main character makes. The idea of pouring so much of your love into your significant other that you lose yourself, or that you have nothing left when it ends, and things like that. Things about holding something back for yourself. Things about Javier Bardem. The movie spoke to me a bit, and it was very good timing. Then, because I love myself so much, I took myself out for linner at 5 Napkin Burger, as they just opened a location by the Astoria movie theater. OH MY GOD. Go. I got the Original burger with Tuscan fries, and sat at the bar, and contemplated my good fortune. I also took half home for later. Then a quick stop at the grocery store, before heading home to watch Disk 1 of The Brothers Donnelly, because I like the man candy.
All in all, a wonderful weekend. I alternately felt flattered by men, loved by friends, and treasured by myself. (Sorry, gag.) But I'm having a lot more good days and feel like I'm really excited about where I am and where I'm going in life, and I haven't had that for awhile. So anyway, thanks for letting me vent all that mushy stuff.
Last night I Skyped with Britch, which was lovely. Hopefully we'll get back to doing it frequently enough so that we don't have to talk for three hours to just catch up. I ate plums and peaches from our CSA, which are just divine, and I sat around in sweats and loved the temperature. Oh, and then Sleeve finally texts me (after no response on Sunday) and says "What's up babe??" Right. I text back a little later and say what is up, which is Catching up on tv, eating plums, and wishing I were at a bonfire. And ask what is up with him. Basically. Then no response again. So he seriously just sent me a What's up babe text with no follow-up. Man, I don't get this guy's approach. I feel like he could've been so money after that "I want to do this right and take you on a date thing" and now he's screwing it up. I mean, that was sort of a golden ticket for the actual date. Oh well, I feel a sort of detached bemusement, so we'll see what happens.
I'm working on blurring out the faces of a picture of Smee and I from the golf outing...so look for that soon! I mean, I guess it's pointless if you can't see our faces, but whatever. Happy Tuesday! And don't worry all you cold-weather haters, summer will be back at the end of the week.

Oh world, I missed you. BUT the good news is that a receptionist started on Monday, so now I'm saved from answering the phones and jumping up when the doorbell rings and I can focus on my new job solely. I also managed to re-arrange the cubecastle so that any pedestrians walking past can no longer see my monitor. I'm very proud of myself, and I think I pulled it off so it seems like I just made more space (and am not a creepy porn-at-work pervert or anything.) The downside (or maybe still an upside) is that the young summer intern in the cube next to me gets to hear all my animal noises of frustration that I make without realizing it, because I am an 80-year-old man. I think it's part of relationship-building, personally. I do get to listen to his fratty apartment/roommate troubles by overhearing his phone conversations, too, so I think we're even.
What else is new? Where was I last? Oh right, the week after my brother's visit. So I have an update on Montana... After my last post about the sporadic texting, he called me on Wednesday night, and we chatted a bit. He was out with friends and wanted me to come, but I was in for the night, so he asked me out for lunch on Thursday. He wanted to take me to this place in Union Square because they have a shrimp dish he loved, and he said we'd take a cab from my office so it doesn't take too long. And then he said he had a plan for Thursday night, and he'd tell me about it at lunch, but he made sure I was free. So then I went to sleep and he'd texted later to tell me to "Bring a change of clothes to work tomorrow and a bathing suit. Work clothes, though the suit is optional." WHHAAAA? This was fun and exciting and made the planner in me very nervous. But it was rather charming, and I didn't think he's going to murder me or he wouldn't tell me to bring work clothes, right?
So then we had a very nice lunch, and he kissed me hello and goodbye. His plan was to go to Connecticut right after work that night. His mom lives there and her condo has a pool, and he said we'd hang out with his friends and sleep either at his mom's or friends'. And I'd take an early train back. He said "It may not be a good plan because it's far..." and I said it sounded like an adventure and he also said something about how he knows I don't know him that well, but I said I liked the spontaneity. I did say I couldn't stay up all night and he said "No, we'll go to bed at 10."
So we took the train to Stamford. It was so fun -- we hung out with his friends, an engaged couple, and we stayed at their apartment. It ended up that I didn't meet his mom -- she is a teacher and there was graduation yesterday and then an "after party" so she wasn't at her place, and we just went straight to the pool anyway, where it was empty and surrounded by trees and condos and sat at a table and ordered sandwiches and played in the water and stuff, then back to the friends' apartment when the pool closed and watched tv/hung out there (with their neighbors, too), and then bed. Twin bed in the extra bedroom with no A/C but a fan. He made good use of some ice cubes, let me tell you.
I took a 9 am train back (they'd dropped me at the train station) because I'd previously cleared coming into work an hour late, so I had a bit more sleep time. We did not go to bed at 10, but maybe 1, then stayed up till 3 having fun (and he said that he should've made us go to bed earlier, too, but I agreed it's hard when people are having fun and drinking beer) and then I didn't sleep much until after the sun came up, then I dozed a bit. But his friends were really nice and hospitable and it sort of felt like being home in Ohio. And he's just adorable and very sweet and I may have had bite marks on my back. So, you know, score.
He's just very mellow but attentive. I like the combination of rough-around-the-edges dude and sweetness. And bearded blue-eyes, you know. We decided to talk on the phone while he's in MT and said we "like" each other, so we'll see what happens. Yeah, I'm also trying not to get ahead of myself, but I don't feel too crazy about it -- I'm in a good spot. I think. But I'd be in a better spot if he calls me soon. He actually first asked me to call him, but I'd rather not be first, because I'm a girl and self-conscious. Still, I'll give it till the weekend and then perhaps reach out. WHAT DO WE THINK ABOUT THIS, readers? I should be more optimistic probably, but I always have a Plan B.
WOW LONG STORY, sorry. I don't know that much else is very newsworthy. Schmauren moved to Boston on Saturday, so I'm in denial about that. Wahhh. Britch is also in Laos for six weeks, which means even less communication than when she was in London! And also, I hope she doesn't get a communicable disease.
That said, this past weekend was a nice quiet one after so much activity. Friday night I crashed early to recover from Connecticut. (That sounds weird -- has anyone had to recover from Connecticut ever before in history?) Saturday I fed a friend's kitties and played with them for awhile, then got a fancy facial with a gift certificate I received for Christmas -- it was so relaxing and amazing. Then home for Netflix and bed. Sunday I did some cleaning and organizing at home and avoided going outside in the heat as much as possible, and that's it! Last night was Harpie dinner, and it was as delicious as always (though low-carb this time), but my stomach still got very angry with me, and is still a little upset today. I hate that it holds a grudge.
Tonight I should hit the gym if I can hold up my motivation (and if my stomach calms down), and tomorrow night I have a 5:30 softball game and a 6:30 kickball game, so I may only make it to the bar-end of kickball, but we'll see. I hope the weather forecast is right and it's cooler tomorrow -- I may die if it's 90 degrees. This upcoming weekend should be good and social again, so life is pretty grand. I clearly heal from heartbreak via a rebound, so thank goodness that process is happening. I haven't talked to Mex in two and a half weeks, and I've fully realized my anger and his selfishness, so I feel good about moving on and away from him entirely. I mean, it icks me out to think otherwise. Anyway, FINALLY I have some optimism back.
Food isn't worth getting into today -- normal breakfast and then lunch salad is all I have. Gross leftover Trader Joe's chicken sausage ravioli is waiting for dinner. (Seriously, don't buy it. It's mushy and bland.) I will say that I weighed myself at some point over the weekend and I'm still pretty much in the same zone, so that's good news after the brother-visit-pig out. I hope to be more regularly blogging again, too, so get ready for inane reports of my office managing days!

Stormy Weather
So it's yet another softball game day with another storm in the forecast! This one sounds promising though...1 inch of rain? And it's already cool and cloudy? I could use a normal night tonight, one in which I stock up on some groceries, hit the gym, and get to bed early.
Monday night I met Schmauren for drinks at Sweet Afton to discuss her impending (devastating) move to Boston in a few weeks. I mean, I am very happy and excited for her, so it was good to hear about her plans and possibilities. Then we were joined by her roomie Schmarie and friend Schmess (haaa). And the very cute bartender named Matt (or "Tom" as Schmarie and Schmauren decided to call him) gave us whiskey shots with a pickle(juice) back, which was the weirdest thing I've ever put in my mouth, and that is saying something. The place is a gastropub and feature local pickles on the menu, so the juice was really spicy and briny and strange, but hey, it took away the whiskey aftertaste, that's for sure. There was some texting with the Drummer, which contained some very awkward flirting coached on by Schmauren. (Sidenote: I still think he was just being mean!) Then we met some Astoria fireman (who are mostly all from Long Island) and mingled with the very guido-esque group. I talked to one of them the most and gave him my phone number at the end of the evening -- he wants to take me bike riding! How sweet and not fitting with my stereotype! Of course, as he drove away, past us walking on the sidewalk, he called out the window "Goodnight Samantha!...I mean Stevie!" so that wasn't so great...but it was funny. He called last night (during Glee, so no, I did not answer) and left a nice voicemail, so I think I'll call him back tonight. I mean, while I'm not sure I could imagine going on a date with him, why not see what happens? It's a new type for me...sorta. It's my rebound type, I think. Here's my new bumper sticker: Feeling blue? Try blue collar!
Yeah, I'm a snob, but you probably already knew that about me, so I'm not worried.
Anyway, I'm learning that I can meet men and socialize, so obviously the next step is meeting men I connect with, yes? In time, my friends. Last night I was pretty beat after staying out on Monday till midnight (not late normally, but on a MONDAY?) so I went home from work and Skyped with Britch for nearly 3 hours, which was amazing and much-needed, and then made supper and watched Glee with the roomie. It was very restorative, except for the part where I made a mess of everything I touched. As in, the fish I was baking somehow dripped on the bottom of the oven, despite my aggressive foil-lining of the pan, then the smoke set off the very sensitive detector, and I'd tried to shower while the fish was baking so I was naked, fresh out of the shower, fanning a dishtowel in front of the kitchen smoke detector to shut it up. I couldn't pull over a chair to stand on to reach it and press the button since the dining room chairs are all blocked by the big AC on the floor, waiting to go into roomie's room. Then I accidentally threw couscous around while trying to stir, then I spilled the garbage while trying to tie the bag, etc. I was a mess and I don't know why...maybe it's hormones. I finally quit and went to bed.
So today I was bad again and didn't pack a lunch, as I didn't have any lunchmeat. (TWSS.) I will probably buy some low-cal soup since I did a salad yesterday, but that doesn't make today's plan very interesting. Dinner will be chimichurri mahi-mahi and couscous, though -- leftovers from yesterday that hopefully I don't dump on the floor. And I need to weigh in again, though I'm a little uncertain this week. I should try in the morning, though. And that's the haps, folks.

I'm a Montauk Monster and What I Ate
Welcome back, me! And you! Yes, I got back Sunday night, but I was in no mood for posting yesterday. I'm sorry. (Wow, that was grumpy. Let me backtrack.)
The weekend was amazing! I should have pictures uploaded to show you tomorrow, but until then, I'll give you the verbal (textual?) recap. I took the Jitney on Friday at 5:30, and it was so easy compared to taking those stupid Bolt buses or whatever. Also, you get a snack and a drink! And you pay with a credit card once you're on board (though you reserve your spot online ahead of time.) So the ride was smooth and fine, and we got to Montauk at about 8:30. It was dark and cool and damply breezy in a good way, since I had to wander awhile before I found my motel. (Once I actually found it, I felt like a dunce as it was very easy nearby, but their street signs are hard to spot as they're vertical posts in the ground, and so my map wasn't helping since I didn't know what street I was on.) I checked in and the nice desk clerk went over the town map with me, circling places he recommended for eating, hanging out, hiking, etc. Then I settled into my beachy motel room, took a long, Aveda-accessorized shower, and watched some Food Network before bed.
Saturday I woke up slowly, then walked the two short block's to Anthony's Pancake House. This diner was across the street from John's Pancake House, and there is a big rivalry, but my trusty desk clerk had said he preferred Anthony's, so I stayed on that team. I had a tomato, onion and feta omelette and lots of coffee, read my New York Magazine, and then headed back to the room to sunscreen up before heading out to find the trail head and hike Shadmoor State Park for awhile. I saw lots of pretty butterflies and wandered on sandy trails in the brush, and little wooden bridges over streams, and then finally along the bluffs that overlooked the Atlantic Ocean as well as Ditch Plains beach, which is the main surfing beach in Montauk, though the waves weren't really tubular when I was observing. Then I walked back through town to explore a bit more, and since it was the Montauk Music Festival weekend, there were bands playing in the town center's open space as well as in all of the bars and restaurants. I wasn't actually hungry for lunch, so I meandered back to the motel, poking around in shops and in a little boutique on my way, where I tried on pretty summer dresses. And some kids opened the dressing room curtain wide to show me to the store. So back to the room for more sunscreen and to hop into my swimsuit, then I hit the beach (which was across the street from my motel) for some sunning and reading time. At about 3, after many hours outdoors, I was sunned out, so I headed back to my room to write in my journal and then take a lovely nap.
I woke up groggy around 6, then got myself cleaned up and went to Shagwong for dinner (as I'd checked out menus earlier on my walk.) I ordered steamed mussels in white wine and a small house salad, plus two glasses of wine, and it was delicious and there was a nice mellow band playing to help set the mood. After eating, I went next door to The Gig Shack for a "classic rock" band and a beer. I sort of talked to a few people in my age range, but there were not many around (maybe four, total) and so I got bored after one beer, which was fine. (Oh, and I'd been keeping up a texting conversation with the Drummer since Friday afternoon...but that seemed to finally dwindle on Saturday night.) I sleepily walked back to my room and tucked myself in early for some Saturday Night Live and sleep.
Sunday I woke up bright and early again (which is 9 am, for me) and headed back to Anthony's, thinking I didn't want a big breakfast so that I could actually get lunch somewhere (which I wasn't hungry for on Saturday.) I ended up just getting two eggs, sausage and cinnamon toast, which of course lasted me all day anyway. Then I headed back to the beach with plans to stick it out for 3 hours, but only lasted nearly 2. It was pretty hot in the sun, and I'd try to give myself a whore's bath in the ocean to cool off, but the ocean water was painfully cold, so I finally decided my little skin had enough sun and went back to the room to shower, pack up, and then relax for awhile before I caught the 3:15 bus back.
All in all, I got through some of my foggy thinking about my current Mex situation, and came to some helpful conclusions. Of course, there was some drama yesterday (hence no post) when I got back so it all immediately blew up in my face, but I think I've regained that peace today. I'm trying to, at least.
In other news, remember that guy with the girlfriend with whom I made out? (You try to not end that sentence in a preposition!) I did e-mail him the following Wednesday, like I'd promised, and it's been a few weeks now, so I figured he had gone the way of the dinosaur. (What? Did I make that expression up?) Well, he e-mailed me last night, so I just read it this morning. It's nice to hear back from him, and to hear some compliments and sweet nothings, I'll say that much. Otherwise I have to make some decision about how to proceed, but whatever, I'm not responding immediately so I can just enjoy this feeling for today, right?
Last night I Skyped with Britch for a very long time, and it did immense amounts of good for my mental health. She pointed out some very clear problems with how I'm handling this situation (or at least, pointed them out in a way that finally made sense to me) and was able to help me shape my thinking about how to proceed. I miss her constant counsel now that she's across the sea, but I do appreciate it greatly when we can find time to talk! Also, she's in love. Let's be happy for her!
Today is rainy and sleepy and boring at work, but I'm in a good mood and catching up on my personal correspondence. I may hit the gym tonight, though I'm not very motivated at the moment -- it feels like I've been here for SO LONG and it's not even noon.
Food, which is finally getting back on a healthy track, I hope. I've eaten sugar-free brown sugar and cinnamon oatmeal with berries and fat free half&half for dinner the past two nights in a row. Weird:
B - Special K Red Berries, coffee, milk - 4
L - turkey & swiss, yogurt with berries - 6
D - sun dried tomato & chicken brat, salad with feta (and new exciting TJ's salad dressing) - 6
S - orange if it's edible, string cheese - 2
Total - 18 (I'll add some somewhere.)
Weight - 140 lbs. Gotta work on those last few pounds, though I feel good right now so I'm not stressing too much.

Please, Stop the Music and What I Ate
I am near the breaking point today with all sorts of drama that I didn't cause, so excuse my very short and boring post. Basically the "other woman" found me on Facebook and sent me an apology e-mail this morning with her side of the story, and some things were enlightening. When confronted, Mex said he should've told me all of it but thought he told me the important stuff. I said lots of things I should've said earlier, as I'm showing him more of my anger. (Like, "You're disgusting.) So we're going to talk tonight to see if there's actually a baby (which I doubt), and we'll see how that goes. Then I need to step away.
So yeah! Great day! At least work has been nice because I've had to run random errands which get me out of the office and make the time go faster. And now I don't have any projects so I'm going to work on my freelance stuff a bit, so yay, double cash.
I also learned that the kickball and dodgeball league I used to play for in Manhattan now has a Queens kickball offshoot, and they play on a field very near to my apartment. I think I'll sign up for this summer, as it should be a good outdoor activity and a great way to meet new people (read: boys.)
I e-mailed the long-lost lover last night about a possible Florida rendezvous, so I will keep you posted if he responds. I know he's not on Facebook very often, but hopefully he'll still get the memo, as it were.
So tonight I think instead of Shredding, I'm going to Skype with Britch. I think my mental health should take some priority over my rocking body today. I already felt a lot better after talking to her last night, in part due to her medical expertise that supports my made-up beliefs, and also just because she makes me feel less crazy.
Anyway, food today:
B - honey bunches, coffee, milk - 4
L - sammy, yogurt with peach slices - 6
D - ww pasta with sauce, salad - 6-8?
S - orange, soup - 2
Total - 18-20 (I may add an after-work string cheese if needed.)
Activity - mental breakdown

I Loved David the Gnome and What I Ate
Well, it's supposedly the first softball game of the season at 7:00 pm tonight. It's been really rainy the past few days, however, so of course I'm hoping the fields are too wet to play. :) I'm scared to pitch! At least it sounds like we'll have some practice time on the field before the game starts, so they can see if I'm worthy. Unfortunately, the sun just came out a little bit ago, so that might mean game on.
Last night I hit the gym and rode 9 miles/45 minutes on the bike. It felt like a good workout, helped along by the steamy heat inside my gym -- I sweat like I was exercising in a sauna, and I am not usually a heavy sweater. (Ha.) Then it was home for dinner making, tv, reading, a quick chat with Mex, etc. All in all, an uneventful but decent evening.
Ready for the gnome story? This comes courtesy of my mother's church friend, and is about her co-worker and the co-worker's son. Got it? So this co-worker woman has a young teenaged son who is home during the day and is also autistic. He obviously can be by himself, but isn't always the quickest on processing life situations. One day he calls his mother at work four times in a row, upset. Once she gets a chance to call him back, she's concerned, asking him if there is an emergency. He says, "Mom, there's a gnome in the house! A gnome!" The mom can't get anymore information out of him, so she finally asks her boss if she can leave early to head home and figure out what's going on.
She arrives at he her house only to discover that a census taker had apparently come to their door -- a midget census taker. The son had never seen a midget before, but knew gnomes from his stories. He proceeded to pick up the "gnome" and shove him into the hallway closet, then lock him in safely. The gnome, fortunately, realized that this boy didn't quite have all of his mental faculties, so was trying to talk calmly to him through the door. "Please let me out. If you keep me in here for long, I'll get hungry. And then if I don't eat, I'll get sick!" So what was our enterprising young hero to do? Simple -- he found the gnome-friendly jelly beans in his Easter basket and began to slip them under the crack in the closet door, one by one. And this is the scene that his mother walked in on. It really happened. Too bad the local news couldn't pick it up, as the family was concerned about publicizing the information that their vulnerable son would be at home alone during the day. Who knows what garden creature would stop by next?
Well, in other joyous news, I just found out that my softball game has been cancelled! I'm sure the fields were too wet to play on, and I am excited. I think I'll walk home OR do the Jillian Michaels' shred -- to be determined.
I finally was able to connect with Britch, at least over G-chat just now, and I feel loads better. (Ew, that's kind of a gross expression...) And I appreciate your commented apology, lady. Anyway, I am much more settled in my head now, and instead of panicking about whatever happens tomorrow, I'm pretty sure I'll deal with it either way. My other mental escape at the moment is considering a trip to Florida to visit an old lover -- it might be nice to get in some beach, some margaritas, and some potential making out, right? What better healing step could I possibly take? :) Anyway, it's under consideration.
Well, foooood.
B - Honey Bunches with Strawberries, milk, coffee, string cheese - 5
L - chicken & cheese sammy, yogurt with peach slices - 6
D - artichoke lasagne, salad - 6
S - soup, orange - 3
Total - 20
Activity - walking home or shredding
OH OH OH and official weight this morning - 140 lbs. NEARLY 130s. I think my lowest of my adult life is 136...so we're getting closer.

Why Should I Worry and What I Ate
This morning's a pretty quiet one at the office, so I'm catching up on my internet reading and music listening, specifically on this site: The New York Nobody Sings. It's kind of a smorgasbord, but it only features songs about NYC, and I'm enjoying exploring it. (Note: They didn't feature this video, but my brain traveled this path all on its own.) It was also a lovely sunny morning again, so that always gives me a mood boost on my way to work, though it's supposed to rain this afternoon.
I made a date to Skype with Britch tonight after work, and luckily I think I'm going to be able to combine that with the cooking preparation I need to do for dinner. Mex is coming over later for some of that Best-Ever Chicken Meatloaf, sweet potato fries with rosemary and thyme, and I think sauteed spinach with garlic. So while I chop and mush and season, I can finally catch up with Britch. We haven't spoken in so long that it's depressing, and as she's my de facto therapist, I'm probably mucking up all sorts of things that I haven't realized yet.
You may notice that I've added "ads" to this blog...we're going to see how it works. Apparently I *could* make money this way, which benefits us all (because then I can tell you how I spend it!), but if they're too annoying or unwieldy, I'll get rid of them. In other blog news, we hit a milestone this week -- on Tuesday, March 23, we had our highest number of visitors yet! Thanks for hitting me up, world.
So I believe I already discussed how I was asked to pitch for my softball team this year, and my mixed feelings about this. Well, now they want to schedule a practice for this Saturday in Rockland County...which is a good drive north of the city. The practice would be from 10 am - 12 noon, but in order to get there, I'd have to leave my house around 8:30 am to get a subway into the city, probably East Harlem-ish, then meet my ride for the 30-45 minute drive to the fields. And then do it all in reverse after practice. I'm sorry, but that's not how I want to spend a Saturday morning/early afternoon on a spring weekend, and I don't think I can be faulted for that. (Well, maybe I can...) I also have some plans to hang out with Schmate in the afternoon, and that's been a long time coming, too, so I don't want this softball thing to crowd into my social life. But now I feel like a poor team member for bailing so early on. I'm also considering how much lower my intensity level is about this team than some of the leaders' are, and wondering if I should just offer to step aside if they'd rather find another girl pitcher. I don't want to "give up," but I also don't want to put in as much time as it appears they want me to. What is the answer, friends? Is it reasonable to expect a teammate to put in about five hours on a Saturday for the cause?
Well, time to look productive. It is nearly lunchtime, right?
Food today:
B - Honey B, coffee, milk - 4
L - turkey & swiss, apple - 5
D - chicken meatloaf, sauteed spinach, sweet potato fries - 7/8
S - yogurt, granny bar, maybe string cheese - 3/4
Total - 19/21
Activity - walking at lunch, mushing up ground chicken with my bare hands
