WHERE THE EFF IS SPRING?

Because 73 does not feel like spring.  Or March.  And it's lovely outside but in my office it's a hotbox and I am so cranky.  Also I'm bored because I'm really caught up here and I have read all of the internet today!

Things are going well.  Sometimes I still feel stressed about what's left to do at home (I guess because I have busy weeknights this week), but it's really in fine shape.  We still have to go to Ikea for bedroom furniture, and it may get a little crowded in there but it'll fit, and I need the living room curtains to arrive and I have to decorate with photos and stuff a little more, but it's almost there.  Somehow it seems like I need to clean the floors every other day, but I think this weekend I'll do a big vacuum/mop/scrub to the floors (there are some spots behind the radiator that no one should ever have to see) and then spot mop for another week or two until I do that again.  It seems to collect dust more than my last apartment for some reason, but it's a boy with boy hairs and the Target reviews online did say the new towels were "linty," so what can you do.  Oh, and I need to figure out how to clean off old grease spots on the stove and the stove hood.  (PEOPLE ARE DISGUSTING.)  I've tried all of my cleaning products and elbow grease and there's still some that won't budge.  Any cleaning hints would be appreciated!

I had a fun weekend of Homeland marathon and Greek food at home with Hike on Friday, helping Schmillie look at Astoria apartments on Saturday then the girlfriends came over for some drinks at my place (my first in-person visitors!) and then we went out for St. Patty's and I got very drunk.  Which was very fun, but I also managed to pull something in my back (it's been sensitive with all the moving/cleaning/lifting I've been doing, and I just pushed it too far somehow), so the past few days have been painful but it seems mostly better today, finally.  Sunday I slept, laid around, and ate Chinese food.  And then last night I cooked Five Alarm Chili for us and for Harpie dinner, which will be tomorrow night.  Our theme is our astrological signs, so I had to make an appetizer that represented my Sagittariusness, so I figured the chili would work for my fire sign that loves travel and adventure (it's got Mexican flavors) as well as curiosity, since I sort of made it up as I went with some scant guidance as far as ingredients.  I'm going to serve it in small portions in little corn tortilla cups (if those work when I bake them in a muffin tin tonight) and just some cheese and crema and green onion on top.  I'm pumped!  Plus we'll be eating a few meals out of the pot, too, so it was worth the effort.  I put laundry off until Thursday, since tonight I get my haircut (and I'm super excited about it though I'm not doing anything different), and tomorrow night I'll be with my fellow zodiacs.

I took out my cartilage earring on Sunday, too!  It had been suddenly bothering me lately when I slept on that side (I think it was rubbing the strap from my eye mask), and then I was thinking it's probably time I moved on from that look anyway, as I am 30 and it didn't mean much to me anymore.  I'd had it for 10 years!  So it's out, and I have the hole still but it'll hopefully close up.  It's not noticeable anyway.  Besides I still have three holes in my left earlobe, so I'm not too square.  I feel the same, guys.

Um, Hike still hasn't slept at home.  It just never seems like the right time!  He'll be done with class late and then I want to feed him and then we're both tired and he doesn't want to have to schlep his stuff home, and so whatever, we'll see how this plays out.  I don't want to worry about it.

OH I FORGOT THE MOST EXCITING PART.  Schmillie found a very cute, quirky, HER apartment on Saturday and she just found out today that she got it.  It's like less than 10 minutes from my apartment!  It's going to be great!  She has always lived an hour away (at least) so this will be so fun to have a new neighborhood friend and I'm so going to push the "drop-by" neighbor type of relationship.  That would make me very happy.  (Just like Friends, right?)  Now we just need some male friends in the area to balance things out.

In weight news, I am feeling slimmer and my clothes are fitting more loosely, though I tried to weigh myself this morning and it hadn't moved, which was confusing. I blame my slopey bathroom floor.  Also I'm sure I've been burning calories with all of the cleaning and stuff, so maybe I added muscle weight?  Anyway, I feel good so I just have to keep eating fairly well and enjoying myself.  I definitely need to lower my stress/anxiety levels, so let's just relax and let it happen, right? :)  Ha, I'll try.  OH CRAP but I do have to be in a swimsuit in a month for Schmate's Bachelorette Trip to Miami...but with all girls, I suppose, so it's not as nerve wracking.

SUMMER IS HERE, basically.  We only had one good snowstorm!  I'm grieving the winter that never was.

Not Dead Yet

Wow, again, keeping up with this is getting difficult!  But hey, I'm back to being a little slow at work again, and there are so many things to talk about.  Get ready, world.

Let's do major topic summaries, shall we?

Love:  Things are pretty good!  Hike and I are still learning how to fight, but it's getting better, and we really only have big ones when we're both tired at the same time and short on patience.  It's new to me that he feels I get cold and distant in an argument, because I never would have thought of myself that way, but I admit that it's true that I want to win at any cost, plus I want to protect myself, so I sort of get really rational and act superior.  I'm working on that.  He, of course, gets angry and irrational and I hate that, so it's a process.  Surprisingly (or not), he responds better when I just yell whatever I'm thinking (i.e. "You're being retarded and I don't understand why!") -- he'll get calm again.  We obviously come from different fighting camps, and it's an interesting process.

But in BIG LOVE NEWS (or whatever), we signed a lease together!  I was feeling ready to leave my roommate situation and soon, so we started looking in late January for March 1.  There are not a lot of options for March 1 that early, but we saw a few and really liked one of them, so we moved quickly.  It was actually supposed to be a Feb 15 move-in, and we were asking the owner if we could delay, but turns out the current tenants' move-out got delayed so March 1 was perfect.  It's still in Astoria, but on a different subway stop (the one where I wanted to be) and less than a 3 minute walk to the train.  It's on an avenue, so it's a busier section, but the apartment is cute and laid out really nicely, with a separate eat-in kitchen and a linen closet.  Also only one clothes closet in the living room, but hey, that's NY.  We'll just buy an Ikea wardrobe.  So the plan is that I'll move March 3 (Saturday) and he'll join me probably June 1, when the Spring semester of school (his MBA) is finished.  He can't really handle doing it during school, both time-wise and stress-wise.  I like it because I can sort of experience living alone for awhile (even though he'll be around quite a bit) before I never do again (in theory, at least.)  I'm currently going crazy with online ordering of things like shower curtains, kitchen tools, etc., but it's fun.  I've also just started packing books and things, and after this weekend, I'll really get down to it.  I can't wait to set up a place just how I want it, without someone moving my shampoo because she thinks there's a better spot for it or whatever.  I'll be FREEEEEEE.

Oh, and this weekend we're going away to Cornwall, PA for a B&B celebration of Valentine's Day.  Yesterday Hike had a dozen roses and chocolate delivered to me at work, then we had a nice dinner and he gave me a book about Downton Abbey. :)  We did get into a small disagreement at the end of dinner because I wanted to talk about how it hurts me when he keeps telling me our engagement timeline and then changing it, and I thought we could handle talking about it positively and without a problem, but then he lost his patience and said I wouldn't let it go.  I said he should practice active listening so I know he understands.  Anyway, we resolved it rather quickly but WHY CAN WE NOT CELEBRATE SOMETHING WITHOUT HAVING AN ISSUE?  Also, related, why can I not talk about what's on my mind all the time?  Blahhhhh but it's all fine now.  He understands and said it won't happen again.  Whatever, I just want it to be an exciting topic and not such a crappy one.  It's not that I'm saying "propose now!" I'm just saying "stop pushing it back four times please."  That doesn't make me feel very desired.  Despite your promises to the contrary.

So...oh right, so I changed my mind on the "I want to be engaged before we live together," because it was adding so much pressure and deadliney-feelings to the whole thing.  Also, I'm sort of OK not being engaged yet.  I feel like I want to work some of our communication issues out first.  And obviously it's not really a fun topic right now anyway, so I just want to ease off of that.  One thing at a time.  He thinks the summer will be a good time for him to get it together with proposing, so we'll see what happens.  I'm fine with waiting right now.  And scene.

Weight:  I'm casually doing Weight Watchers, and I also made some big changes to my "everyday" meals.  No more cereal for breakfast, and instead I'm having one hard-boiled egg and some cottage cheese with fruit.  I am also eating almonds instead of granola/Special K bars.  I was feeling like I wanted to cut out some of the processed carbs, and it (along with fewer splurges) has made a bit of difference.  I'm down around 5 lbs, give or take, but it's going very slowly.  I feel like part of it is the "turning 30" curse, and most of it is my social eating and sweet tooth temptations.  Still, it's a journey and it's going OK.  I read a book called "The Petite Advantage" which had some good information about weight and health for petite ladies, and one thing I liked is that the author was very anti-cardio.  He says you should move as much as possible, but long cardio stretches really only cause you to hunch over, hurt your body and eat more afterwards.  He's big on strength training because of the long, lean muscles and the longer caloric afterburn.  So I bought some over-the-door "gravity straps" and want to do his strength-training plan, but I've only done it about once so far (in the past month.)  It seems like the nights where I have time, I just feel so exhausted when I get home.  Or I am doing moving stuff or Hike stuff or whatever.  Part of that is the winter laziness, and part is lack of motivation.  Oh, and being ill, which I'll get to shortly.  But I know it'll come along, and I'm not giving up on it.  Plus, it's cheaper than a gym membership.  I'm also taking Vitamin D supplements now because those are supposed to help me not want to be in bed all day, every day in the winter.  We'll see, it's only been a week on those.

Health:  I've had a reoccuring case of pink eye this winter.  I have never had it in my LIFE, and have no idea where it came from this time, but it started about January 9.  I went to the doctor, got on eye drops, went back for a follow-up a week later, she said it's better and I can wean off the drops, and then the following week I'd wake up with it again.  This has happened twice more since the first appearance.  Finally the doctor sent me to a specialist, who I like better but basically just added more medicine (an ointment I have to put ON MY EYEBALLS before bed).  I saw her today for my follow-up and she says I'm better, and she's going to wean me off medicine, and she still wants to see me again in three weeks.  So this time I won't take any risks with eye creams or concealer (the last doctor told me I could just wipe off the top of the pot, but NEVER AGAIN) and I'm using washcloths for only one day, etc.  Obviously I've been through about four mascaras, though it's usually only that last weekend before the re-appearance that I've used any makeup.  I'm tired of looking like I have the Spanish flu!

I think that hits all of the recent news.  I'll try to be better about posting, and shorter, for those who don't feel like reading a book.  I'm just so LETHARGIC with this stupid winter.  I need a snowstorm to perk me up!

Slogging Along

That what it feels like I'm doing after all this gross warm humid weather lately.  We had such a brief, shining week of Fall, and now it's hot and uncomfortable again.  Though this weekend should be cooler, and I can bring out the hoodies again, thank goodness.

What a week!  As I've now become quite comfortable spending most of my weeknights at home, I really pushed the envelope with Harpie dinner on Monday night in Brooklyn (theme: Johnny Appleseed) and then a concert last night with Schmeather.  We saw The Head and the Heart at The Bowery Ballroom, and they were excellent, but they didn't go on until about 11:15, after two opening bands, and so I got home at about 1:15 am.  The opening bands were kind of boring -- actually we only went up to the main room for the second one -- so as much as I love seeing fantastic live music, I think I may have to not go on weeknights anymore.  Or now that I'm typing this out, maybe I'll just be really picky about it, since today isn't as hard to survive as I thought it would be.

ANYWAY, I am very much looking forward to a night at home tonight.  I have to pick up the veggies after work, and then Hike will be coming over at some point, but before then I can probably get in some couch and DVR time...  and it'll be nice to go to sleep before midnight (I hope, at least.)

I need to start re-incorporating the gym or some sort of activity into my life, since after a month of letting myself go/eat whatever, I am feeling the results.  My clothes are all tight (which could partially be due to high heat drying, but who knows), my tummy is big (I swear I'm pregnant while having my period, because it feels so firm.  Is that possible?), and I am feeling decidedly dumpy and unsexy.  (Well, except that Hike and I are sexting right now, so I'm still looking forward to it -- just with the lights out.)  Um I guess I also have my extremely light period right now, which could be contributing.  Now, is it light because I'm pregnant or because I'm now taking more hormones (a light dose) for my acne?  Probably the latter.  Oh, and I've also decided that I need to start dressing more like a grown-up, so I've spent a lot of money online shopping recently.  I know I won't keep it all, but I can at least perk up my wardrobe a bit.  And it doesn't help that I'm totally sick of all my summer clothing options.

There's not much news.  The weekends have been full of homework (him); puttering around the house baking, cooking, cleaning, reading (me); visiting the family on Sunday and doing our laundry (me) while he studies more (him); and my weeks have been made up of things like book club, walking home from work (last week, when we had some gloriously cooler days), and catching up on all the new fall television.  Last weekend I had time on Saturday to borrow his car and visit Schmillie in Brooklyn for the afternoon, then head to Trader Joe's in Rego Park to stock up on pantry items.  I'm cooking more dinners, but I enjoy it.  I feel like I'm contributing what I can do to his overwhelming school schedule now.  I also have started making homemade granola bars for him to throw in his bag to eat during class, since he gets so hungry and wasn't bringing anything, plus he likes natural, healthy stuff.  It feels good to support him in that way, and I'm lucky that he appreciates it.  It's how I'm showing love.  (Barf, amiright?)

We've had some serious talks about the future recently, so I'm very happy with where we are and what's to come.  And we've gotten much better at arguing.  The fights do still happen, but usually we can head them off at the pass -- and we're learning how to balance his schoolwork with time together, plus I'm nagging him less to be more organized as he's making a good system for himself.  I'm feeling optimistic about this thing.  And the one-year anniversary of our first date is coming up on October 13, so it feels like a big milestone.  I'm excited!

And that's the story, morning glories.  I feel like I'm getting so repetitive, but hey, consistency is the salt of life.

Lady's Night

I actually have NO PLANS tonight, and while I tried (and failed) to connect with some grrlfriends that I haven't seen recently, I'm sort of happy it worked out this way.  It's been way too long since I've had a weekend-night-date with myself.  Hike has a boys' steakhouse dinner at Peter Luger's to (again) celebrate his brother's birthday with a different group of friends, so I'm planning on heading home, hitting the gym again (I went last night!) and then running some small errands on my block before showering and climbing into bed to watch True Blood Season 3 on my laptop.  Could there be a better home-alone plan?  I think not.  OH and I will make TJ's Butternut Squash Triangoli for dinner with a squash/herb sauce that I'll invent (and walnuts.)  PERFECT.

And then, if all goes according to plan, my prodigal boyfriend will return to me so that I don't have to sleep alone, since I think he might be a spider repellent.  (That or I'm getting bitten at his house...tbd.)

I'm very excited.  I've also been a bit neurotic with him lately, admittedly, so I probably could use some me time.

Right, and on the gym topic, I am really sick of feeling so heavy and guilty for gaining weight again, so mama needs to get back on some serious track with my exercise and diet.  It's going to be hard to eat out and make wise decisions, but I'm trying (and eating lots of fish. That is not a euphemism.)  But I have been off the smokes for a couple of weeks now again, and it's not so bad as long as I remember my lozenges.  And my broken-out chin is clearing up again.  I went back on the Proactiv out of desperation, and I'm using up what I have until it's gone, and then I'll use this Dermologica MediBac stuff that my last facialist recommended.  She also gave me samples, and it seemed to help right away, so I feel good about the switch.  Hopefully I will no longer need a product that is endorsed on MTV every morning for preteens.

So that is the status, folks.  Happy weekends!

I'm Getting Too Old for this Sh*t

Interlovers!  Hello!  How are we on this sunny Monday?  I hear it's gorgeous outside...and it seems that way from my window.  (I don't go outside, especially since I'm re-quitting smoking after a short relapse.)

Well, this was a weekend.  I mostly love sharing a social life with Hike, as we get to do all sorts of fun things and we're integrating our lives pretty well, but lately it's been very busy with his side of plans and I need a rest.  Yes, I like resting more than the average 29-year-old, but so what, who cares?  Anyway, here's what happened.

Friday I had a lady-doc appointment at 1 pm in Astoria, so after waiting for 90 minutes and then waiting another 30 for a blood test (I figured it was time to get tested for HIV.  So fun, right?  I have no reason to worry, but I don't remember the last time I was checked.  I like to be sure of these things.), I went home and immediately started in on the three large loads of laundry that had been waiting around for washing (all the sheets and towels from the parental visit plus my stuff), and then fixed the broken medicine cabinet (which had collapsed on Hike when he was peeing at 4 am last Wednesday, poor thing), did a half-manicure on myself, then got showered and dressed up to head into the city at 7:30 for Hike's brother's 30th birthday party.  We had a big crew of the boys' high school friends (many of whom I'd met before), and then after our butter-soaked dinner, we went to Hudson Terrace.  And guess what?  His sister-in-law had decided to commit to bottle service, since that's the only way they'd give us a reservation -- but she didn't tell any of the party guests.  Whatever, we made the most of it and drank a lot alot ALOT of vodka.  And shouted at each other since we could barely hear anything.  And Hike and I danced a bit, which was very fun.  It ended up being really enjoyable (especially dancing with the open-roof, so under the night sky!) but I don't remember getting home very well.  And Saturday was a day of puking and napping, of course.  I was so dead.

So Saturday night I manage to get dressed again without falling over (barely) and we go to Hike's mom's and then out to dinner in Huntington with the whole crew (Franny, mom, bf, bro, sis-in-law, us) and the restaurant was LOVELY.  I felt better after eating something, too.  After dinner, we put in our appearance at his best friend's girlfriend's suprise birthday party at that restaurant's bar.  We nursed one drink each (it was an open bar that we sadly could not take advantage of) and then said our goodbye's, got some Ralph's Italian Ices, sat on a bench to eat them, and then headed back to his house to play some more of our video game and crash.

Sunday was up with an alarm so we could be all cleaned up in time to go back out to LI for a fancy brunch buffet with his bro and sis-in-law again and his father and stepmother and the sis-in-law's parents.  It was to celebrate the boys' birthdays, as both were recently, and we went back for plate after plate (raw bar! omelette station! cream puffs!)  Then it was back to Dad & step-mom's house for chatting and presents.  We got back to Astoria around 7 pm, worn out and sleepy.  (Plus I was half-teary all day as I'd started my period.)

Anyway, lots of good family time, of course, but lots of diamond-ring comparing on Sunday and wedding-picture looking and talk of MONEY and man, I feel poor around these people, but I also feel pressure.  Like, I'm mostly fine that I want my whole wedding situation to be more affordable (so we can buy a house someday, of course), but these ladies make me feel pretty intimidated.  It's going to be tough, I think, to make everyone happy, but I shouldn't be worrying about that now.  Still, a day like that is psychically challenging.  Otherwise it was a nice weekend, and I had lots of silly fun with Hike throughout, but I'm looking forward to some more alone time and down time next weekend (before a wedding trip the following one.)

Tomorrow we're going to see Bridesmaids, too, and I can't wait!  Then Wednesday is softball (and it's supposed to be HOTTT) and Thursday he'll probably just come over for dinner, then phew, it's Friday again.

And tonight.  I finally have a chance to get a pedicure and wax and stuff, so it's time for that.  Of course I keep putting on weight from all this social eating, but when will I exercise?  No idea.  I have to figure out a better plan.

Wellll thanks for listening, pals.  Until next time.

STYmied

I haven't quite managed to start working yet this morning, so I figured I'd go ahead and check in with you, friends.

I'm so out of it, as usual for a Monday morning.  It doesn't help that I'm achy from some Saturday activity (I'll get to that in a bit) (don't be perverted) and my right eye hurts and has a red swollen part on the lower lid.  Is this a sty?  I'm going to look it up now...  EW.  Ok, it may be a sty but it does not look like a pimple or a boil...rather there is a hole in the lower, inner eyelid, a tiny one, and it hurts.  So there.

Weekends!  Weeks?  How long has it been since I've talked to you?  Things at work are clearing up significantly, since we hired a receptionist who started last week.  She's young but sweet and sharp and I really like her, plus she's so eager to please that she's doing a great job, as opposed to our last, goth-chick burnout person who was rather slow and always wore black.  It's a lovely change of pace.  This means my feeling of drowning at work has been relieved and I'm fairly organized and have a neat to-do list on my desk -- in other words, I'm not stressed about work at the moment.  Amazing.

So last week I walked home three times (Monday, Wednesday and Thursday), which felt good and tiring and made me feel a little more in control of this body.  It's four miles home from our new office, so it's a good little hike.  (Ha!)  Tuesday night I saw Source Code with Hike, which was really interesting and suspenseful, and we had Thai beforehand.  I had Veggies and Chicken with Peanut Sauce, which was delicious but probably not great for me with the peanut fat.  Oh well, could be worse.  Then Friday night we went to Red Lobster for dinner with his brother, and shhh, his brother saw a baby roach on the wall next to me and squashed it with a coaster.  We told the waiter, who told the manager, who promptly moved us to a different table, comped all of our meals, and gave us free dessert.  It was totally worth it, and since we moved, I didn't have the creepy-crawly-roaches crawling up my legs feeling!  I was very impressed with their efforts to not have us Yelp about the incident.  OH and I ordered the Broiled Seafood Platter, which was almost the healthiest option, and very delicious.  I did have a few Cheddar Bay Biscuits, however, and once she offered a free dessert, the three of us split this chocolate chip lava cookie with ice cream (ZOMG), but I tried and behaved rather well.  After dinner, his brother's wife joined us and we all saw Fast Five at the IMAX theater.  SO FUN.  It was just really entertaining and I'm so into Vin Diesel, I really can't help it.  I loved it whenever he was on screen -- now if only he'd had a love scene like that one on the hood of a car in the first movie with Michelle Rodriguez.  Swoon.

Saturday I woke up with a headache, probably from allergies and sleeping with the window open, so we relaxed then Hike left for the gym and I finished reading my book club book, finished the Series Finale of the Tudors on DVD, and napped briefly until I felt better.  Then, as it was so nice out, I was inspired to do some weeding in the garden, and moving the big rocks and planting a few things.  It felt nice to be out there, but man, I forgot how much the back of my legs hurt afterwards!  I'm still so sore and stiff, and I think this is what it'll be like when I'm elderly.  I should have stretched but I wasn't even thinking!  In the early evening, Hike helped me take some stuff to the Salvation Army in Astoria, and then I got behind the wheel so we could do a test drive to JFK.  I am going to pick him up next Monday night when he lands from Vegas, and I'm also going to have use of his car while he's gone (whoo), but as I hadn't driven in NYC since I first moved here, it seemed like a trial run wasn't a bad idea.  It went really well ("you exceeded my lofty expectations," said he), even when he remembered I had to exit across three lanes at the last minute.  And it felt so nice to drive again, except in the narrow part of the Grand Central right around Astoria.  It's a little scary there.

Saturday night we met up with Hike's friend and his gf, and the four of us went for dinner in Long Island City at Masso.  I drank these basil lime gimlets that were AMAZING, and I ordered salmon with a balsamic reduction and asparagus, though you can bet I wanted chicken parm or lasagna -- but it was good and filling and I felt very proud of my decision!  Then the four of us went back to my apartment to play Scene It: 80s Edition, and Hike and I SMOKED them, and then it was to bed.

My firm had given me the Yankees tickets for Sunday afternoon, and it was a gorgeous warm, sunny day here.  We took another couple, friends of mine in Astoria, and we had a nice relaxing afternoon, even though none of us were really Yankees fans (and Hike wore his Mets hat).  I got a little sunburned, which was nice, and we left after the seventh inning to beat the traffic -- and were home in about 20 minutes, since it's so fast to drive from Astoria.  Then some relaxing time at home with Hike while he watched the Celtics/Heat game and I sort of dozed, then we went grocery shopping and I made us turkey sandwiches for supper, and then he left and I settled in for bed and watched The Guardian before sleep.  It was a little cliche but I really enjoyed it!  And I also do love Costner, plus I have a crush on Ashton that never went away, so you know, win all around.

And that was my lovely, rather full weekend!  Now if I could only buckle down at work and stop thinking about how irritating this eye problem is...grr.  Tonight I'm going to get my nails did, and tomorrow night is book club and then dinner with Schmillie and Schmate, and then Hike will come over afterwards, then we're going to see his mom for an early Mother's Day celebration on Wednesday or Thursday, then he leaves for Vegas on Friday and I have scheduled a FACIAL [Oprah voice].  Saturday I have fun Astoria brunch plans with some ladeez, and then it's my much-anticipated Trader Joe's run, and that's about the extent of my plans.  I may try for a Target trip while I have the car, too, but I'm going to run out of room to store all of my goodies in my apartment!  He gets back on Monday night, so it'll be strange to sleep alone all weekend, but I think it'll be nice to have a little distance so we can remember how much we appreciate each other.  A little absence to make the heart grow fonder, you know?  As long as his absence doesn't involve any strip clubs, but he's given his word and is apparently not interested in them, anyway.

So that's what's up, folks.  I'm doing a little better with the weight control, I'm doing a little worse with the smoking, and I'm trying to relax more and worry less.  The fabric of my life, right?

Slogging Through April Showers

Welllll I'm delinquent again.  Let's catch up.

My weekends have been filled with bed/cuddle/movie/Fraggle Rock time, family time, and date time.  I feel like the past few weeks have been very busy but the calendar is clearing up a bit for the next month, which I'm very much looking forward to.  I've had plans every day for about two weeks, and I do not function well that way -- I need allotted down time for sanity.

So this past weekend was a happy hour and then birthday party with Hike and his friends on Friday, and then Saturday we went out to LI for his one-year-old cousin's first birthday party.  Afterwards we went back to his place and stayed in, as it was soggy and windy out and we were in no mood to be adventurous.  We watched a bit of the Ken Burns' Civil War documentary and ordered tacos.  Sunday we drove out to his grandma's for lunch with mom and her bf, too, then he dropped me off at Harpie dinner in Williamsburg.  I cabbed it home by 10 pm and then stayed up too late finishing a disk of True Blood.

Things are very good, in general, though I feel like I've been overly anxious and putting a lot of pressure on myself and my relationship lately.  I need to relax and not expect so much perfection, I think.  It'll help to have some time to myself this week, plus work is calming down again after a rough few weeks, so I'm not at such a high stress level.  Our receptionist resigned and her last day was last Thursday, but I interviewed someone today that we want to hire (oh, plus my boss delegated the whole hiring process to me which made me a little nervous), so if she accepts we can move forward with some good support and I can delegate again.

Tonight I am going to get my nails did and eyebrows waxed, and then stop at the grocery store and go home and make some Roasted Onion Soup for the next couple weeks' lunches.  Tomorrow evening I can do laundry, then I'll see Hike on Wednesday, since he has plans tomorrow so we won't have our usual movie night.

IN BAD NEWS, I now weigh about 144 lbs.  I have gained 10 pounds, I think, since January?  I blame quitting smoking, a successful relationship, and Girl Scout Cookies (by which I mean my lack of willpower.)  I am still trying to not beat myself up about this mentally, but it doesn't feel great.  Once I finish a few more boxes of cookies, and once I can walk outside more, things will get better.  RIGHT?  Also, I want to think about it less.  My lover things I'm hot, so it's really just about me feeling pretty.  Stupid little body that can't metabolize anything.

I'm also wayyyyy too in my head lately about whether I'm a bad friend, a bad girlfriend, an annoying person, a needy person, etc.  Why can't I just mellow out?  I need to remember my mantra, and also listen to more meditation music that I download for free from Amazon.com.  (And maybe book another facial?  Yes, I think so.)

Accctually, Hike is going to Las Vegas in a few weeks (for a weekend) and I think I'll book it for while he's gone.  I'll also have use of his car, so I can make a trip to Trader Joe's in Queens and STOCK UP like it's the HOLOCAUST.  Siggghhhh I wish it were always the weekend, and that my life were full of things like grocery shopping and facials.  (Maybe in ten years when he's VP, as Hike likes to say.)

Well, we must carry on, readers.  The Springtime gloom will lift soon -- hopefully for Easter next week!  Love you.

Weekend in Review

Hello, my law-abiding interfriends.  How were our unseasonably cold weekends?  It's just so frustrating to have been teased with a few warm days and now we're back to actually painful (ungloved) hands on my walk to the train this morning.  COME ON.

So the weekend was great but they are going so quickly now that I spend less time laying in bed eating tacos.  (That is not a euphemism.)  Friday night I took Hike out to Club A Steakhouse to celebrate his promotion at work, which we knew about awhile ago but it took a long time for HR to get him transitioned.  Today is when he starts the new position in the afternoons, and then next week he'll be fully moved to the new department.  I had bought a Living Social discount for the full prix fixe meal for two plus a bottle of wine for $80, which was a decent deal.  Our reservation was for 6 pm so we could just go from work, and we had appetizers (he had steak tartare, I had a ceasar salad), we both ordered a filet mignon and shared two sides (whipped yukon potatoes and creamed spinach) and then shared two desserts (carrot cake and tiramisu) and a bottle of wine.  It was a relatively fancy place, as they decanted the wine at our table AND did the crumb wiping, and the food was good, with the steaks being the highlight.  It was a really lovely date, and we had a lot of fun with each other and acted mushy and enjoyed ourselves very much for over two hours of lingering at the table.  Oh, and we had some serious Future Talk.  I love Future Talk.  Then we cabbed home to relax and watch Fraggles.

Saturday I headed over to Schmillie's for Henna Party: Afternoon Delight Edition, and she put out a very nice spread of cheese and shrimp dip and homemade olive tapenade, and we gorged.  We also had two bloody marys and then two bottles of wine, so you know, it was fun.  Oh, and she gave me homemade apple pie to go, later, since we were still SO FULL.  We played with the pets (she is in the process of moving in with her adorable boyfriend, so we were at his Red Hook loft and he has a dog and a hairless cat, which is mesmerizing), and at one point took our wine downstairs for a smoke and managed to not notice the cop car parked down the block.  Long story short, they wanted to fill a quota and we looked like two middle class white girls, so we got ticketed for open containers in public!  Luckily the fine is only $25 or I would be much more upset.  It's rather ridiculous but we did break the law and now we are officially rebels.  I haven't felt this conflicted since that shoplifting bust when I was 15.

So I cabbed back to Astoria and Hike picked me up to go to dinner (we tried this new place Dekko, which was not very impressive.  It's just fine.) and then it was 10 pm so we just went back home for more relaxing.  Sunday morning I battled a bit of a headache, but I wasn't too hungover, and then around noon we drove to see his grandma in the Bayside (Queens) area and visited with his mom and her boyfriend, who were also over visiting.  We had macaronis and gravy and meatballs and sausage, then the three ladies went grocery shopping for Grandma (and I picked up a few things), and actually Grandma insisted on paying for my grapefruit, apples, spinach and turkey sausage, and brown rice for Hike.  Oh Franny!  I wouldn't have put anything in the cart if I knew she wanted to buy it, but it was really sweet of her.  The men stayed back to watch some NCAA, then we all relaxed and had tea and cookies before Hike and I headed back to Astoria and for some more Fraggling and a late supper at my house.  Then bedtime!

I dreamt that I was in college and I had a girlfriend who then dumped me, and I felt so embarrassed that she was dumping me to go back to her ex-boyfriend.  It was very strange, but I think it reflects some recent (and slight) changes in the dynamics of my lady friendships.  Today is good -- I'm groggy, as is the usual on a Monday, but I didn't take any sleeping pills so it's not too bad.  Has anyone tried Melatonin for help sleeping?  Hike is very into natural stuff and while I am not drinking all of that Kool-aid, it's influencing me a little.  But hey, I gave up Splenda for Stevia before he and I were serious, so it's not all him.  Anyway, I sometimes need some help calming down on Sunday nights, so if Melatonin works, I'd be interested.

Speaking of healthy changes in my life, I'm still weaning off of the Proactiv.  I use it about once every four days now, and in the beginning, I definitely was breaking out on my chin area, especially, but I think I was also feeling more stress.  I'm pretty calm lately (famous last words) and my skin is also improving.  I have been using this all-natural face care line about every other day, which I bought at the spa when I had my facial this winter, and I love it.  It just smells so great and makes me feel pampered and it's nice on my skin.  I use the cleanser, toner (aka lotion) and cream for combination skin, and I just ordered full-sized bottles of each, plus a bottle of facial oil to work into the routine.  I'm looking forward to using adult products and feeling pretty when I wash...so let's hope the breakouts continue to lessen.

And I am still smoking when I drink, which is occasionally, and this past weekend was the first time I'd bought a pack (to bring with me to Henna Afternoon.)  It proved again that I can't own them, since I smoked two yesterday.  It's like DESSERT, I have very little willpower, and I just think "I'll smoke them now so they'll be gone and then I won't have any."  I only have a few left at home, and I'm fine not smoking during the day or anything so I don't think this is a total fail, but it's a dangerous flirtation and I need to behave again after these are gone.  (Yes, I know, but I won't behave until they're gone, so shut up.)  I don't want to be a smoker, but at this time in my life (when I'm not a mother, when I live in the city and have social drinking functions and am youngish) I will have one every once in awhile, and that's going to be OK.  I just don't want to smoke a lot or be controlled by them.

Any other news?  Not really.  Today I'm cooking a half chicken from our CSA in the crockpot, so tonight I'll shred it and I think make soup...I was going to add BBQ sauce, but I have some lovely soup ingredients at home and it'll be a good WW-appropriate lunch.  (Well, either would, but this might be better.)  I also plan on going to the gym after work, since I went last Thursday (while my clothes were in the dryer at the laundromat!) and it's easier to go again once I break that hurdle.  Plus I've stopped GAINING weight but I'm not losing any yet, either, so we need to kickstart that process.  Especially since I ordered my bridesmaid gown for Britch's wedding on Friday and am SO NERVOUS about the fit.  Too big, too small, all of it.

P.S. I ordered these shoes from Piperlime and they arrived last week.  They are HOTT, right?  I'm in a shoe phase, what can I say?

I'm Taken with the Notion

Hello interlovers.  How are we?  I'm doing well today after a miserable Monday yesterday.

The weekend was lots of fun.  Friday night Hike joined Schmate and Schmillie and AWR (Shmate's mate) for a wine & cheese spread at Schmate's in Murray Hill as our lovely Schmauren was driving down from Boston.  As luck would have it, she arrived just in time for the tail end of the spread.  Then the merry sixsome headed to the new Murray Hill location of Bareburger, my Astoria favorite, for a variety of meats and milkshakes.  It was great to catch up with Schmauren, and then she drove we two Astorians back home for our slumber party at my place.

Saturday Hike and I slept in a bit while Schmauren headed out to meet her old roomie and cutest person ever for brunch...without the food.  When I finally roused myself to her phone call, we planned for me to meet them shortly and then we'd all eat together.  (I thought she was in my living room this whole time, but I think my creepy roommate scared her off with my spare keys.)  It was a lovely brunch and I had a delicious roasted mushroom, scrambled egg, and Parmesan panini with fig spread (that I ordered on the side) to sweeten things up.  Then Schmauren and I went for a mani/pedi session, then home to relax (I napped) before heading into the city to meet Schmillie for more wine before dinner.  We then walked to explore Eataly and as we didn't want to wait an hour to be seated, we each grabbed a slice of foccaccia pizza to go.  So good!  We munched and walked down to Flannery's on 7th and 14th for some good drinks, music, and convo.  We even scored a table, so it was the perfect destination.  We called it a night around 1 am, and I cabbed back to Hike's.

In the morning he had to run off to LI for his fantasy baseball draft, so I walked home, stopping for some groceries along the way, then cleaned and organized in my room and marinated some chicken.  Then Schmauren picked me up to meet Schmannon and Schmeather for brunch at MexiQ.  It was amazing, though the service and wait time for food was a little slow.  But we had lots of time to chat, and we (except Schmauren, who was driving home afterwards) enjoyed the unlimited Bloody Mary option for $7, and I ordered the BBQ Brisket Eggs Benedict on Jalapeno Corn Muffins.  AMAZING.  So so good.  I want it again and again.  After brunch, Schmauren hit the road and the remaining three of us wandered down Steinway for a little shopping and coffee, and then the girls headed out for some afternoon sports and beer while I went home for more organizing and napping and grilling of that chicken for lunches this week, etc.

All in all it was a great weekend, and I loved spending so much time with Schmauren, and while I missed Hike as we had more time apart than usual, it was nice to see so many girlfriends and get some things done at home.

Yesterday I had a sore throat, probably from smoking with Schmillie while drinking this weekend (what can I say?) and felt really out of it, but I slept a lot last night and feel much better today.  I can tell my body is sometimes fighting something, and if I behaved badly, it would probably progress, but instead I sleep like a cat and it gets better.  I haven't been sick in a very long time, people.  Yes, I'm [knocking on wood].

Tonight Hike and I are having some delicious Thai food and then seeing The Adjustment Bureau for free with his free movie pass deal, and then sleeping at mine.  It's our first midweek sleepover experiment, so we may murder each other when the alarm goes off tomorrow, but hopefully not and it'll be the first of many.  I feel very adult, plus I want to share more of our lives, so I'm looking forward to it.  If anything it'll help me feel more consistently secure and at peace about things and then hopefully less sensitive to minor infractions.

UMM I'm hungry right now, but should not be.  I've been doing fairly well at weight watching during the week, except when eating out, so obviously it's still not that strict but I do what I can.  On Sunday I marinated thinly-sliced chicken cutlets in fresh oregano, Worcestershire, mustard, and Cajun seasoning, and grilled it all up at night, so I'm having those in sandwich thins with LT and honey mustard for lunch this week.  Four points!  Plus a 1-point string cheese.  And it was satisfying yesterday (I was good until I ate all those Cadbury Mini Eggs before bed), but I feel hungry right now, and I only ate like an hour and a half ago.  This must be mental, right?  Maybe I'll eat some Special K to tide me over.  UGH I just need my stomach to shrink again!  On the inside, I mean.

So of course for dinner I want the Pineapple Fried Rice with Chicken, but that's probably a terrible choice.  I'm looking online now for the better options that still sound appealing, but ugh, I wish my metabolism could process delicious food.  Oh, food.

Well, obviously I have nothing too exciting going on, but this is the latest.  And now I'm ready for a nap.

Get Me Outta Heeeeere

Wellll it's getting warmer out, and sunnier, and I am starting to walk around this fair city again. It feels good! And I feel less like this:

I think that's a sleeping bear cub. I want one! Anyway, work has been very productive since last week, when I got caught up and they officially changed the workflow so that I'm not project managing work for the incompetant staff -- now the staff get to hang themselves by their own rope, and I get more time to work on my own stuff instead of their paralegal stuff.  I'll help as needed, but I'm not the first go-to anymore.  (One lawyer was treating me as his personal secretary, basically, so this should improve things greatly.)  So good.

The weekend was lovely, but went way too fast again.  Friday night I talked to Britch for awhile, then Hike picked me up and we went to Bareburger.  I had the lamb burger with cucumber and tzatziki, and a side salad, and it was delicious and didn't make me feel ill afterwards.  Then home for some good conversation and listening to music together, and then Fraggles.  Saturday I went to Carroll Gardens for Harpie brunch, Mardi Gras-style, and it was delicious and very fun.  Plus I love that neighborhood, so just walking around made me so happy.  I cabbed it back so I could take a quick shower and be ready for Hike to pick me up at 4:30 for the Devils game.  We drove to Newark, met up with his buddy who helps the Islanders' broadcast team for a bit, then got some supper (pizza and hot dogs!) and found our seats.  The game was pretty exciting and went into OT, and then we drove back and were home around 11.  Sunday I was feeling motivated since it was so lovely outside, so we drove to his mom's for macaronis and gravy and hanging out, and then he took me to TARGET.  Swoon.  I stayed within my promised one-hour shopping time, and it didn't drive him away, so it was a success.  (I'm intense in Target, people.)

And Sunday marked five months since our first date, so it was a nice day of hanging out and enjoying ourselves.  Five months seems like a long time!  In the beginning I'd be like "Ohhh I feel serious but it's only been x months," but now I feel like I can legitimately be in a serious relationship.  You know, in my crazy head, it makes a difference.  But only a little.

This week will be pretty full, but I'm so excited about these hints of springtime, plus with the clock change, I can get more done after work because I have more energy.  Last night I walked to the library and then ran some errands (and the walk was over 2 miles), then tonight I'll walk to book club, then have dinner with Schmate and Schmillie at Penelope, and I'm looking forward to catching up with my ladies.  Tomorrow night I'll see Hike again, then Thursday is open so I'll hopefully get more exercise, then Friday night Schmauren arrives and it's a munchtastic weekend ahead!  I can't wait.

So I installed a Weight Watchers point tracking app on my phone, and I'm going to try and adhere to the plan during the week and take the weekends off.  Obviously it'll still be tough with dinners out, etc., but I'm going to do my best and since it's this interactive thing, hopefully I'll be more interested in entering the data.

I think this blog has gotten much more boring now that I'm not dishing on my love life, right?  I am welcome to any suggestions for spicing things up.

ALSO, in a daydreamy way I've started looking at apartments online.  You know how I love Astoria, but I love the Carroll Gardens/Clinton Hill neighborhood so much, I was also looking there.  Unfortunately very few of the Craigslist offerings were the cute brownstoney type that I'd want, but it's SO FUN to look.  I would also go to Long Island City -- I like the vibe there.  So right, I'm just putting it out there.  I suddenly have a real estate porn problem.

Well fine, I'm going to go figure out how to make a fillable PDF form.  My life is a whirlwind!

Be Kind, Remind

It's Lent!  And though I wasn't raised in the Catholic tradition so never gave anything up for Lent, I appreciate the discipline and have decided to give up (by which I mean try really hard to stop) thinking negative thoughts about myself.  It's been a tough winter, self-esteem wise, because (as happens every winter) I have no energy to move around, I just want to sleep all the time, and I put on my Mama Bear winter weight.  Added to that this year was the 5-pound weight gain from quitting smoking and the comparisons to my athletic and very healthy boyfriend who likes to go to the gym.  So I think about how heavy I am, how he must hate my body, how he must compare me to other women, etc., when in reality he loves me and was duly warned about the cigarette weight-gain (and was unconcerned) and yells at me when I cover myself up self-consciously.  So, I have to chose to believe him.  I also have to choose to be nice to myself, because all this beating-up hasn't resulted in any changes, just miserable eating!

My struggle is hunger and cravings, plus dating meals.  My resolution will be to try and make good decisions, to try and move around when I want to (which will be more often as it warms up) and to not get hung up on any bad decisions I've already made (even if it was ice cream 20 minutes ago.  For example.  No, I did not eat ice cream at 11 am.)

And I need some context.  I'm still only up five pounds for all this bad behavior, and I know I can drop that fairly quickly with some stricter behavior.  At the same time, I will be enjoying many delicious meals out with my partner and friends, and I am not going to limit that joy too much.

Isn't it always this same thing?  Why is every female friend of mine trying to lose weight?  I don't know one single lady (and I mean married or single) who is just content with her weight...except maybe this beanpole associate at my office who eats McDonald's and mac & cheese for lunch.  But for all I know, she thinks she's too thin?  So right, ridiculous.  Where are these women who we're trying to look like?  There can't be that many of them, or I'd know one, I think.  Maybe my slightly rolly mid-section is just how it's supposed to be.  And maybe (apparently) that is lovable and sexy and I need to stop suicide bombing my relationship with my issues about it.

So right, I forgot my lunch today but after comparing nutritional information for two of the meal options that sound best (a Moaz falafel pita and Baja Fresh), I'm going with tacos at Baja.  They are SIGNIFICANTLY healthier, like frighteningly so, and still delish.  I already feel good about this decision!  Plus I'm wearing my favorite cozy sweater today.  I sort of feel like Mokey from Fraggle Rock in it.

My new haircut kind of looks like that, too.

Tonight is Shmannon/Thigh's birthday drinks, and I'll get to hang with Schmillie there, too, then race back to Astoria to pick up the veggies, then home for a reasonable bedtime, thank goodness.  Monday night I didn't sleep well, so last night I konked out but I always need lots o' sleep for maxium functionality.  And I keep dreaming about large houses/dorms/mansions where I'll be staying.  Like in the dream I'm picking out which room -- I've had five of these dreams recently, though the details always change.  WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?  Dream dictionaries haven't been much help, since it's such a specific situation.  Please help me, interfriends.  And sweet dreams.

Doin' the Humpty Hump

Well, we made it to Wednesday together.  It's actually warm out, and the change is a little welcome.  I'm OK to go back to winter after this, but a slightly more interesting day does break up the monotony.

Last night I compromised on my gym intentions and did the Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred DVD at home.  Well, initially Hike was going to come over, but he had to work late and so we pushed that off until tonight after my book club.  So then I felt I should finally exercise again, and I did.  For 20 minutes.  But I sweated and panted and jumped, people!  There is nothing more motivating and frightening than wearing a sports bra and little shorts and doing jumping jacks in front of the full-length mirror in one's bedroom.  And I have a bit of soreness today, which is a good souvenir.  While I think my weight is heading in the right direction again, I'm feeling a bit self-critical about the jiggly-ness of it all (and you know how the red tide can affect our view in the mirror, right?)  But I'm in a good position to be toned by the summer, if I can keep on task.  Maybe I'll even be able to wear two-pieces in front of my boyfriend?  Which is silly when you consider what else I wear in front of him (ahem), but you know...

Otherwise I'm glad the weekend is on the horizon.  I hate that I feel like that every day now, but I'm really LOVING my weekends and I'm in sort of the doldrums at work.  I know it'll pass, but right now I'm one of those rats in the rat race.  What can you do?

Tonight is book club, and then a visit from Hike and hopefully we'll be watching the original True Grit -- he's supposed to get it from Netflix today.  I am looking forward to comparing and contrasting.

Yes, life is rather boring at the moment, but it's really good, too.

Slush Pile

What a miserable day in New York!  Rainy, slushy, slippery, and a Tuesday.  This was actually my worst commute of the winter weather so far, as I slid around a few times on my walk to the train.  Boo.

But life is still pretty good, right?  Let's stay positive.  SPEAKING OF, Hike and I just bought tickets to see The Hold Steady at Terminal 5 in April, and I'm very excited.  I'm also like "Oh, gee, general admission standing room?  That sounds annoying."  I'm so old.  But it will be worth it.

So how were our weekends?  Mine was really nice.  Friday night I went to Schmillie's for the revival of the Henna Party, and we got snaxx and wine in the city before taking the train to her place, and we gushed about our boyfriends and smeared the stuff on our heads and only smoked A LITTLE and listened to music and played rummy.  (I am terrible at rummy, especially when not paying attention.)  Oh, and we ate Chocolate Covered Pretzels.  Lots of them.  I want some now, actually.  Then I cabbed it back, Hike came over, and off to sleep after some Fraggle Rock.  Saturday we went to visit his grandparents (on his dad's side) on Long Island, who I'd not yet met, and also saw his dad and wife and his brother and wife, and it was a nice afternoon.  We left and got sushi for dinner in Rockville Center, where they live (and where Hike used to live for awhile), and then drove back to Astoria and caught the 8:15 showing of True Grit.  I LOVED it, people.  We'd been waiting to see it until we could see the original first, but we gave up.  (There was a Very Long Wait on the original on Netflix for me, though he magically is receiving it this week.  We decided as long as we see them both, we can still compare.)  It was just really serene and fun and beautiful and touching, and that lead girl is so impressive.  She's the perfect little no-nonsense child/teen, but yet doesn't have some sort of show-off attitude about it, and I really liked her.  When we got home I put the ingredients in the Crock Pot for White Chicken Chili so it could cook overnight, then more Fraggles.  Sunday was a lovely, lady crampy day for me, but it was OK because we mainly stayed on the couch, watching football then the Golden Globes, eating chili, and babying me.  I'm very lucky.

On Sunday we also booked a B&B for President's Day weekend in Newport, RI.  We'd looked at some different New England spots, but that one seemed the most interesting for a winter trip -- like, a summer destination town but quiet in the winter, with New England-y stuff going on (there is a Maple Syrup-tapping event at some local farm place, and also a Winterfest weekend going on while we're there).  We agonized over which B&B, too, but this one's rooms looked the nicest, plus we'll be in the TOWER SUITE and above us is a common-room in the actual tower, so we can go look at the harbor and meet the ghosts up there.  I'm very excited.  I also will try to not overload him with super-nerdy stuff that I want to do (shops! antiques! historical walking tours! maple-syrup tapping!) though he seems game for them, too.  It'll be great, plus we picked that weekend so we could drive up on Saturday morning (instead of Friday night) and then stay till Monday, the holiday, for a more relaxed trip.

Yesterday I had to work, LAME, though the retardceptionist called off sick (after spending the weekend in Atlantic City, hmm), so it added to my pain because I had to sit at her desk and answer the phones.  I may be due a sick day soon, right?

Oh, and so I did smoke 3 cigs on Friday night, but then NONE since then.  It seems to be getting a little easier [knock on wood], like I'm not thinking about them as often.  I also weighed myself on Sunday morning and I was back to 134/135 ish, which means my pre-Christmas weight!  That was thrilling, though like I said, I'm not going to be as strict about the weight right now.  Yesterday I was extraordinarily hungry (so I snacked on an extra bowl of cereal, which isn't too bad), and I'm letting that go.  I also wanted to go to the gym last night, but come 5:00 pm I was so zombie tired that I just went home to lay on the couch under blankets and watch the most recent episode of Downton Abbey.  It probably doesn't help that I am not leaving the office all day, but right now that is the best way to avoid temptation.  Now that the retardceptionist is back with her pack of cigarettes for bumming, I will have to be extra strong.  I can do it!  I already feel very proud of myself.  It's been a week, and while I've smoked about 6 cigarettes in that week, it's significant progress.

So right, I should get some work done, but life is pretty grand for a miserable Tuesday in January.

Back to Blech

Good morning and happy hump day!  I'm starting to feel like I belong in my New York life again, though just barely.  Let's catch up on the rest of my visit home, shall we?

Sooo Britch's Scottish boyfriend proposed to her on the Wednesday after Xmas, which was thrilling for all of us. Hike's highly-anticipated arrival was on Thursday, then home for fam dinner, then out with the friends, and we all got silly at Mutz (a bar) and he met the whole crew.  I think he did really well for being surrounded by strangers, most of whom were related to Britch.

Friday aka New Year's Eve, we laid around watching TV all day since we were hungover and had stayed up late, then went to a house party with the friends at Britch's house.  We had lots of fun though we were a lot calmer than the night before.

Saturday we drove around town for the afternoon so I could show him little stuff, and we stopped at B&J's house to meet their boxer (and my other boyfriend), Cash, and then at night we double-dated with my parents -- we went out for steak dinner and then to the local Walleye hockey game.  It was nice and very comfortable (though I think we were still low-energy from recovering from Thursday night.  We are so old.)

We all went to church on Sunday morning and then ate dinner in front of the Steeler's game in the den (to humor my dad and brother).

Oh, and Hike met my Grandma before she left on Friday, and she thinks he's a "nice young man."  He really got along with my brother, too, so all in all it went as well as it could have.  My parents are huge fans. The only embarrassment was caused by my friends telling him all my high school stories, of course.  ("Stephanie used to spit out milk at lunch all the time when she laughed, Stephanie has no butt crack," etc.)

All in all, it was a relaxing and calm vacation, and I'm still adjusting to being back.  I think I'm a bit homesick still -- or maybe just relaxation-sick.  But I hate leaving my family at first, and knowing I won't see them until the summer, especially with my parents getting older, not to mention Grandma.  I mean, it's the only option, but it's hard right now.  Soon I will be fully back into the swing of my life here and feel fine, but I'm in that January funk right now.  Hike says we should plan something else to look forward to, and I agree.  It won't be CHRISTMAS, of course, but something on the horizon would be nice!

So Monday morning I flew in, went to work, then met the Harpies for dinner with our dearly departed member who now lives in Ireland!  She's visiting so it was good to be fully reunited and eat tons of great tapas.  Yesterday I grocery shopped to stock up the fridge and make some healthy stuff again (I think I gained 4 pounds at home, but I can feel that,) and then cooked.  Weight Watchers Cream of Broccoli Soup with garlic chicken sausage (for protein) and then I put together a butternut squash pasta bake for dinner tonight, so tonight I just have to bake it for a bit.  Hike's coming over for dinner, yay!  I'll also saute some spinach with mushrooms and onions for a hearty and healthy winter meal.

We've made some plans, too, since it seems like the calendars are filling up.  I love having a boyfriend who will make plans!  We're going out Friday night, then he may join me for a friend's bday party on Saturday (tbd), we may go to Long Island to see his mom, and then next Thursday I'm going to meet his college friend and we're going to see a drag showing of Sunset Boulevard in Chelsea.  I am inordinately excited about this.  Apparently his friend was a bit concerned about how draggy it is, like I might be offended or uncomfortable, and Hike told him that I'd "get a kick out of it."  I was like Honey, those are my people.  It's going to be awesome.

I do have to reflect more on the New Year and what I want to do with my brain, so that will be another post, but this was the big catch-all.  Happy 2011, lovers!

Your Love is Like a Rollercoaster, Baby

And now let's talk about what else has been going on with little ol' me. Last week was a big one for feeling productive.  I finally got caught up at work, so while there are still some minor settling-in issues (mostly having to do with our computer network), I am much calmer and on top of things.  I also got my yearly review, which was entirely positive and glowing, and I'm getting a raise and a large bonus as a reward for my efforts.  It's very exciting!  I'm going to use the bonus to pay off my student loans, so I will be debt-free by 2011.  I can't wait!  Oh, and I finished my Christmas shopping for the most part, too, so it was a good week for being organized.

But the same day as the review, I got a call from my doctor's office, as I'd had a lady-doc checkup on Monday of last week.  So they needed to see me on Friday but wouldn't tell me why, which spun me into a panic overnight.  I hate HIPA rules because I should be able to sign a waiver saying GIVE ME INFORMATION OVER THE PHONE, ASSHOLES.  At least we had Harpie dinner on Thursday (theme: Bingo's birthday, so each dish had to start with one letter of the word Bingo), so I was distract and reassured by my dear friends.

Friday morning (after paying $50 copay for a specialist and then waiting 90 minutes to sit with a doctor for a 5-minute conversation) I learned I have a bacterial infection.  I'm not going to give you details, as there are some things that embarrass even me, but basically I am not sure how I contracted it.  That said, it's easily fixed with a strong dose of antibiotics (that I took on Friday, which promptly made me spend the afternoon in the bathroom), so medically I will be/am already fine.

Saturday I went to the gym (yes, I'm back!), ran errands, and caught up with Britch and my mom on the phone.  Then Hike picked me up to go watch the UFC fight with his friends.  Yes, I know.  Initially it was going to be a larger group and still fun (despite the homo-erotic man wrestling) but it ended up being his one guy friend and the two of us.  Standing in a packed bar.  And not eating dinner.  I got a bit low-blood-sugary, but after the fight we shared a sandwich and I perked right up.  Just in time for everyone else to be tired and leave.  It was still a decent night, and I earned points for being "a good sport," as he put it.  Besides, I looked pretty, and I needed to spruce myself up after spending Friday night with him in my PJs with no makeup.  Though he still thought I looked great.  Le sigh.

Sunday I met up with Schmauren and Schmess for dinner at Vesta, and it was delicious and fun.  Such a good treat at the end of a rainy day!  It was good to catch up and eat some meatballs and roasted cauliflower with raisins and pine nuts.  And have a glass of wine.  Siiiigh.  Schmillie went to visit Schmauren this weekend in Boston and I was living vicariously through the stories -- I miss Schmauren and Boston!  I'll have to go up soon.  And Hike came over to Vesta for a few minutes to meet Schmauren (since lives across the street), but then left us to have a ladies' dinner and he went to stay at his brother's for the night.  Then I walked home for bed, full and happy.  And sort of drenched.

And foodwise, I've been good at eating well during the week and on the weekends except for my meals out, and my weight is hovering in the 135-136 range, which I'm pleased with.  I think my goal for the holiday season is to not go any/much higher than that, and then in the New Year I'll try to drop it lower.

Tonight I want to go to the gym after work then write out some Christmas cards, which will be healthy.  What won't be healthy is the ENTIRE APPLE PECAN STREUSEL PIE that my neighbors gave me for feeding their cats over the weekend.  Argh.  I'm going to freeze 3/4 of it so that I can still have some treats this week, and I think that will help me keep control.

This week will be relaxing, as it's pretty open and I can enjoy being Christmassy at home.  I started watching the movie Date Night last night, and may I say that it is surprisingly good!  I've even laughed out loud a few times.  And James Franco and Mark Wahlberg are in it!  And that girl from That 70s Show and Forgetting Sarah Marshall who's name I'm forgetting.

Anyway, I think the health situation is resolved for the most part, and I'm entirely head over heels for Hike, and now I just can't wait for Christmas vacation!  I was feeling so good last week and I think the universe gave me an infection as corrective to how amazing my life was, but shove it, universe -- it's still going great.  Or another option is that God decided that I'd just have one really shitty year (2010) but he'd give me a light at the end of the tunnel, and then 2011 could be the best yet.  I'm going with that theory, I think.

Thanks for reading to the end of this book, champs.

I Just Threw Up In My Mouth a Little

Holy cannoli, folks.  I weighed myself this morning because I could spare the time and because I keep tabs on how far things have (or have not) gotten out of hand, and I weighed 136 lbs!  My lowest ever weight was 134 (on my cheapo scale, which is the Bible here.)  I am so pleasantly surprised, considering I haven't changed much in the way of diet lately, I've only increased my activity level by a few long walks last week, and I'm eating leftover "weekend food" for dinner three nights this week.  But it's motivating me to be even healthier, since I'm so close to lowest, and then maybe to goal!  (Not that I'm as goal-focused as I used to be.  I'm happy-focused.)

I just looked back at my first weight-related post on this blog, and I weighed 150 pounds at the end of last year.  I can't believe that I let myself get back up that high--I've already forgotten about that.  But that also means that while this year has been more about keeping the weight off that I'd lost previously, I've managed to progress.  In fact, I'd venture to say I've improved in all three main categories of this blog.  I'm feeling really content lately.  Or I should say today, since you know how mood-swingy I can be.

Obviously we're not done, as we're never done, and I'm still really terrible at discipline with the smoking.  Any sign of stress and I'm back on the sticks.  I really think I need to put in more mental effort before picking a random day to quit, so I'm formulating a plan and consulting some resources.  More on this soon, I hope.

That said, I have cut back on my drinking--or drinking to the point where I make unwise decisions and/or feel like I want to die the next day.  I can tell a difference in my general outlook, and it's really positive.  My skin is better thanks to Proactiv.  I usually feel pretty or at least cute.  My body isn't the worst, and my legs are ROCKING.  I have fantastic friends who do fun activities with me and who probably saved me this summer, and I'm very thankful for my life right now.

So, smoking, diet, mental health are the orders of the day.  And by mental health, I include trying to BE COOL about the Hike thing, and any other dating situations that may arise.

Food today has been healthy -- the Curried Zucchini Soup with almonds for lunch, yogurt with pear slices soon, and tonight will be my last serving of Sweet & Sour Chicken from Sunday's order.  After work I'm going to walk to return a book to the library and then either Skype with Britch or call my mama.  And then max out and relax.  Tomorrow's supposed to be back to fall weather, which means it'll be more fun to dress for my date.  I wonder where we'll go?  I feel more excited because it is a Friday night -- is that weird?  Oh, clearly I'm obsessed.

Man, this whole post was very high in sugar.  I'm sorry, readers, but I guess this is better than how I was last summer, right?  You know what I did last summer.

Thump Day

Well, it's only Wednesday...I've done worse.

I had a lovely outdoor lunch of pizza and gelato in the sun, and now I'm ready for a nap.  But at least my to-do list at work has eased up a bit, so I have had time to catch up on some internet fun today.  I'm going to write this and then proceed with some heavy lifting, as I'm packing up boxes to send to storage before our big office move this winter.  I'm stressed about the scheduling and the work required, which is still kind of vague, but once we get a handle on the details and get the thing locked down, I'll be able to relax and git 'er done, so to speak.

This week has been quiet.  I've worked late the past two evenings, and on Monday just relaxed with more Veronica Mars, and then last night I made a Cream of Zucchini soup in order to make use of some of the five pounds of zucchini we have from our CSA.  I haven't really eaten it yet, but I tasted it and it's delicious.  It has milk, broth, brown rice, zucchini, and onion, and that all gets blended until smooth, and then you add more shredded zuc for texture, sour cream, and chopped fresh dill.  I also added some diced turkey bacon so it would have more protein and be a satisfying and healthy lunch.  I'm pretty excited about it, especially as though I'm not officially doing Weight Watchers, I try to keep an eye on my "points" eaten during the week, as that's how I've learned to judge the appropriate meal options.  It's basically a balancing act right now between my healthy work-week eating and my terrible weekend eating...unfortunately, I need to cut back more on the weekend, so I can lose these DAMN FIVE POUNDS.  Ok, or ten or fifteen.  Whatever.

I was worried things would be awkward with Smee, but on Monday he stopped by my cube first thing and smiled and started to say something but I was on the phone (I'm so busy and popular), so then I went to say hi when I was free.  I just asked how the rest of his weekend was, and we said how hungover we both were on Saturday, and he said something like "which may explain why I said..." and I just said don't worry about it, and it's been fine and smiley since.  (And I'm not sure which thing he was referencing exactly, as he may have wanted to just reject me further, but maybe not.  He seems to just generally feel guilty for certain admissions. (God, now I want to make an emissions joke, but I'll refrain.))  Which is good, because we had to spend Monday and Tuesday afternoon together in the conference room hunched over a project together.  Our arms would brush occasionally...oh butterflies.  But in a nice way, like in a "I'm confident in where I stand here, and I don't really know that I want more and can't have it anyway, so I will enjoy your giant crush on me" way.  (Ok, fine, a mutual crush that ebbs and flows.)

Remember I told you that I texted Sleeve about wanting more on Sunday?  He didn't respond to that, but texted me the usual "What's up babe?" on Monday.  So I asked if he'd gotten that text, and he said yeah, I'm sorry.  And I said "Don't be, I just want this to move one way or the other, and I don't think that's crazy, do you?"  He replied, "No, I agree."  And only that...but I haven't heard more from him, so I guess that means no actual hanging out.  What a strange bird.

So now I'm free and clear of dumb man distractions, which is mostly good.  I did realize that I get more sad about the past when there's no boy to daydream about, but hey, sometimes I also get excited about who I'm going to meet.  I've got my photo selection ready for my online dating profile, now I just have to find the time to write the thing, preferably when I'm in a witty and clever mood.  Hopefully the stars will align this weekend.

But for now, I am looking forward to drinks tonight with Schmess (and maybe Schmannon) at Il Bambino in Astoria.  And panini (panino?)  And then tomorrow evening is Harpie dinner at Schmags' new Brooklyn digs, which I haven't seen yet.  It'll be great, and I won't worry about getting home late.  (Though the theme is celebrating the aged, so maybe being crotchety about that would be appropriate?)  I'm making

[SPOILER ALERT, HARPIES]

the appetizers, and I sort of forced it to fit the theme, but I'm using crescent roll dough (the waning moon represents old age) as a shell in mini-muffin tins with smoked gouda (like old people are smoked?) and pancetta (aged?) baked with garlic powder (old people smell like garlic?)  We'll see how it turns out.

Enjoy the remainder of your fall-tinged week, darlings!

Tuesday, June 29, 2010

Oh world, I missed you.  BUT the good news is that a receptionist started on Monday, so now I'm saved from answering the phones and jumping up when the doorbell rings and I can focus on my new job solely.  I also managed to re-arrange the cubecastle so that any pedestrians walking past can no longer see my monitor.  I'm very proud of myself, and I think I pulled it off so it seems like I just made more space (and am not a creepy porn-at-work pervert or anything.)  The downside (or maybe still an upside) is that the young summer intern in the cube next to me gets to hear all my animal noises of frustration that I make without realizing it, because I am an 80-year-old man.  I think it's part of relationship-building, personally.  I do get to listen to his fratty apartment/roommate troubles by overhearing his phone conversations, too, so I think we're even.

What else is new?  Where was I last?  Oh right, the week after my brother's visit.  So I have an update on Montana... After my last post about the sporadic texting, he called me on Wednesday night, and we chatted a bit. He was out with friends and wanted me to come, but I was in for the night, so he asked me out for lunch on Thursday. He wanted to take me to this place in Union Square because they have a shrimp dish he loved, and he said we'd take a cab from my office so it doesn't take too long. And then he said he had a plan for Thursday night, and he'd tell me about it at lunch, but he made sure I was free. So then I went to sleep and he'd texted later to tell me to "Bring a change of clothes to work tomorrow and a bathing suit. Work clothes, though the suit is optional." WHHAAAA? This was fun and exciting and made the planner in me very nervous. But it was rather charming, and I didn't think he's going to murder me or he wouldn't tell me to bring work clothes, right?

So then we had a very nice lunch, and he kissed me hello and goodbye. His plan was to go to Connecticut right after work that night. His mom lives there and her condo has a pool, and he said we'd hang out with his friends and sleep either at his mom's or friends'.  And I'd take an early train back.  He said "It may not be a good plan because it's far..." and I said it sounded like an adventure and he also said something about how he knows I don't know him that well, but I said I liked the spontaneity.  I did say I couldn't stay up all night and he said "No, we'll go to bed at 10."

So we took the train to Stamford. It was so fun -- we hung out with his friends, an engaged couple, and we stayed at their apartment.  It ended up that I didn't meet his mom -- she is a teacher and there was graduation yesterday and then an "after party" so she wasn't at her place, and we just went straight to the pool anyway, where it was empty and surrounded by trees and condos and sat at a table and ordered sandwiches and played in the water and stuff, then back to the friends' apartment when the pool closed and watched tv/hung out there (with their neighbors, too), and then bed. Twin bed in the extra bedroom with no A/C but a fan. He made good use of some ice cubes, let me tell you.

I took a 9 am train back (they'd dropped me at the train station) because I'd previously cleared coming into work an hour late, so I had a bit more sleep time. We did not go to bed at 10, but maybe 1, then stayed up till 3 having fun (and he said that he should've made us go to bed earlier, too, but I agreed it's hard when people are having fun and drinking beer) and then I didn't sleep much until after the sun came up, then I dozed a bit. But his friends were really nice and hospitable and it sort of felt like being home in Ohio. And he's just adorable and very sweet and I may have had bite marks on my back.  So, you know, score.

He's just very mellow but attentive.  I like the combination of rough-around-the-edges dude and sweetness.  And bearded blue-eyes, you know.  We decided to talk on the phone while he's in MT and said we "like" each other, so we'll see what happens. Yeah, I'm also trying not to get ahead of myself, but I don't feel too crazy about it -- I'm in a good spot.  I think.  But I'd be in a better spot if he calls me soon.  He actually first asked me to call him, but I'd rather not be first, because I'm a girl and self-conscious.  Still, I'll give it till the weekend and then perhaps reach out.  WHAT DO WE THINK ABOUT THIS, readers?  I should be more optimistic probably, but I always have a Plan B.

WOW LONG STORY, sorry.  I don't know that much else is very newsworthy.  Schmauren moved to Boston on Saturday, so I'm in denial about that.  Wahhh.  Britch is also in Laos for six weeks, which means even less communication than when she was in London!  And also, I hope she doesn't get a communicable disease.

That said, this past weekend was a nice quiet one after so much activity.  Friday night I crashed early to recover from Connecticut.  (That sounds weird -- has anyone had to recover from Connecticut ever before in history?)  Saturday I fed a friend's kitties and played with them for awhile, then got a fancy facial with a gift certificate I received for Christmas -- it was so relaxing and amazing.  Then home for Netflix and bed.  Sunday I did some cleaning and organizing at home and avoided going outside in the heat as much as possible, and that's it!  Last night was Harpie dinner, and it was as delicious as always (though low-carb this time), but my stomach still got very angry with me, and is still a little upset today.  I hate that it holds a grudge.

Tonight I should hit the gym if I can hold up my motivation (and if my stomach calms down), and tomorrow night I have a 5:30 softball game and a 6:30 kickball game, so I may only make it to the bar-end of kickball, but we'll see.  I hope the weather forecast is right and it's cooler tomorrow -- I may die if it's 90 degrees.  This upcoming weekend should be good and social again, so life is pretty grand.  I clearly heal from heartbreak via a rebound, so thank goodness that process is happening.  I haven't talked to Mex in two and a half weeks, and I've fully realized my anger and his selfishness, so I feel good about moving on and away from him entirely.  I mean, it icks me out to think otherwise.  Anyway, FINALLY I have some optimism back.

Food isn't worth getting into today -- normal breakfast and then lunch salad is all I have.  Gross leftover Trader Joe's chicken sausage ravioli is waiting for dinner.  (Seriously, don't buy it.  It's mushy and bland.)  I will say that I weighed myself at some point over the weekend and I'm still pretty much in the same zone, so that's good news after the brother-visit-pig out.  I hope to be more regularly blogging again, too, so get ready for inane reports of my office managing days!
